on Sophocles; new meanings of the word "epic"

Mundane, you and I think a lot alike. I wondered at first about the timing of this little venture of yours, but the summer solstice is rapidly approaching. Preparations must be made with time enough to be effective. Using the recent monologue was a convenient excuse, but the results cannot be denied. Clever, clever. I like it.

On the topic of monologues, the Muse spoke convincingly on behalf of Telamonian Ajax, and I must admit I was touched. It was insightful and, I daresay, eloquent. This from he who was called "beef-witted" and was all brawn. In hindsight, it must have been so hard for him. His fate could easily have been any of ours. Poor well-named Aias, whose name is a lament. It may look like mere lip service to some (and I don't begrudge anyone for that opinion), but I stand by my words. All of them. During the war, there was no denying his skill. A great fighter. For being my enemy, I'm glad he was on our side, and that's the truth.

This new medium of communication is intriguing, giving everyone a chance to be heard, no matter how feebleminded. Even the B-listers have a story to tell, and I do no blame them for wanting to. Only a few of us are lucky enough that our stories withstood the ravages of time. We can't all be perfect. My thanks to Homer.

The modern Muses spoke of Ajax and Achilles, but now, the king of Ithaca will have a turn. Hello, "internet."

Stay smart, mun.

...Are you trying to slander my cousin, Odysseus?

[personal profile] gloryneverdies 2012-05-24 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well...yeah, damn right you wouldn't! Except that he knows people do, and he's probably one of the only people who takes Ajax seriously at all. It doesn't abate his suspicions, and there's a liiiittle something in the back of his mind that's trying to tell him he's being lied to.

But who in the hell would lie to him? Unthinkable. Fine, Odysseus, you're off the hook. This once.]

I just know he wouldn't take to such a thing very...kindly. Maybe saying even that is too kind.

And just when I had begun to wonder how long you might keep us all waiting.

[personal profile] owleyed 2012-05-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and they have splendid inventions now, called maps. [And yet, she's forever teasing.] But I suppose you might have lost those too, knowing how things usually go with you.

A man as clever as you ought to enjoy this little venture.

Oh, I have a way of irritating all the appropriate people. A wizard recently thought it a lark to relocate my internal organs and make them external.

For the record, I'm perfectly capable of bathing myself.

Of course, you never can believe a word Cassandra says.

The "internet", as the writers call it, is quite the terrifying place. Just a warning.

I do not disagree with that, but sometimes, the internet is worse. Or, rather, the people are.

[Oh shit. Oh shit. Is it too late to abandon ship? Flee? Back away and somehow blame this meeting on Neoptolemus? Or Paris, even? He always made a good scapegoat.]

Uh...ha. Well, um. Fancy seeing you here. Any more of you Greeks show up, and I might start thinking these muns are trying for a reunion. Come on, nobody really needs that, right?

No. No. Definitely not, lots and lots of no. Can we...uh. Can we not? Definitely has my vote, not that votes ever really matter, but that's where it is anyway, and right. So. How are you?

Darling, you are precious beyond measure. A pearl of great price. And, I feel, that you ought be rewarded just for existing and making the world a more delightful place.
