[There's gotta be something wrong with him. Beryl is worried. She thinks he must be sick.]

You're just jealous, Mao. [She grins, her tail swishing with pride at his claim.] You know you can't be a cool badass like me!

Say, do you have a fever or something? Maybe your head's getting all messed up...

[She takes out a thermometer and goes over to use it on him. Guess where she's trying to insert it?]

[Mao doesn't care where she's trying to insert it. He makes to swat the thermometer out of her hand. It's almost funny, having her fret and fuss over him and think that this is something as mundane as a fever. But he remembers all her trips to the Nurse's Office to donate blood, barely wobbling afterwards no matter how many pints she gave.]

I don't have a fever, I'm not sick, and you can't be a badass if you're dead! So shut up and die!

[As well as she knows Mao after all these years, she's no mind-reader. Since she only has knowledge of his happy ending with his father and becoming the new Overlord of the Academy, she assumes he has just been playing video games a little too much. Confusing fiction with reality, you know?]

Hey, come on! Stop being such a kid about this! [She's twisting and turning, trying to move the thermometer away from him. Honestly, Mao can be so frustrating sometimes.]

Dead? Huh? [She stops moving to give him a weird look.] Yeah, like I haven't heard that before. Your death threats are sooo lame, Mao! Can't you come up with anything new?

[It's not like there's very much to read, not anymore. Mao's having to force himself to remember how to speak. It's been...well, he doesn't know how long it's been, but that doesn't matter. The point is that there's no one left to talk with.

Mao finally gets a grip on the thermometer. He tightens his hand around it, and it crumbles like powder, spilling red mercury between his fingers and onto the ground like dripping blood.]

[There is something about the look in his eyes that scares her a little. She doesn't know why; she can't even explain it. He just... doesn't look like the old Mao. He is acting weird, and she has no idea why.]

Hey!! [Her token protest at him being a brute.] Seriously, you're losing it! What the hell is wrong with you?

[And because she knows how hard it'll be to get a straight answer out of him, she's going to jump on him and tackle him down to the ground, like she used to do when they were kids.]

[And...she manages it.

Mao, the destroyer of all life, the last thing everything ever saw, goes over backwards with a "whoof" as Beryl knocks him flat on his back.

It's more out of surprise, and surprise over feeling surprise, than anything else.]

Of all the people I've killed, the only one I missed was the one who was already dead.

[Childhood friend privileges, Mao. Since you're immune to her cuteness, Beryl has to resort to more drastic measures. Don't ever say "no" to a determined delinquent.]

[And she'll make herself comfortable right here, until Mao starts sounding more like himself again. The last thing he says makes her eyes widen in surprise.]

Huh? You... missed me? [Her hand goes to his forehead, checking for a fever. Just in case.] Hey, Mao. [Her voice softens a little. Underneath all their bickering and mockery, they share a certain amount of respect for each other.] Maybe you just had a nightmare or something. I'm not dead. See? [She pokes him on the forehead to prove it.]

[He'd actually meant "miss" in the sense that Beryl was the one creature left he hadn't personally annihilated, because she'd already been dead to start.

...still. Her words get a soft gasp from him, and his eyes widen very slightly. A nightmare? Really?

It had certainly felt unreal, after a while.]

Yeah – hey, I’ll bet you stayed up way too late playing video games again, or reading comics! Or maybe you’ve been watching too many scary movies.

[Still poking his forehead, because face it – provoking each other is just something they do.]

[And her doing so gets a faint frown out of Mao, although not much else and it could just as easily be mistaken for him trying to process the situation.]

[And she’ll hop up off of him now, tail swishing playfully as she circles around him.]

You were gonna destroy the Human World? [She stops to wag a finger at him.] ‘Cause of that thing with Super Hero Aurum? You don’t have to kill all humans just ‘cause of that wannabe loser!

Yes, because of that Super Hero! [Mao feels his anger flare up again at the merest mention of that human.] I was going to destroy the Human World to make him suffer! To psychologically torment him before I took my glorious victory over him!

[And he'd done it, too, in the end...just for entirely different reasons.]

Hey, come on. He’s not a real hero. I don’t even want his autograph!

[And she slaps her own forehead with her palm.] Ya know, if you did that, you’d be tormenting everyone else too! What did the other humans do to you? Nothing! Just take up your beef with that Aurum guy!

What do you mean, 'take it up with him'? You mean...I really haven't killed him, yet?

[Well, that sours Mao's already muddled and sour mood. The one high point of that world of nothingness had been that the Super Hero had gotten his very well deserved comeuppance for jerking Mao around like a dog.]
