Am I going to be away for long at this place? Because if my parents think that I was kidnapped too that would be so embarrassing!

Do they at least have any nice shops? Not that it matters, since I don't even have any money anyway. You know that's what you should be working on instead: convincing all our parents to let us work again. Do you know I haven't been able to buy a new top in a month? If this keeps up, I'm going to end up being one of those people who are always wearing the same outfit, every single day. I'd just die.

Not to mention, if my soul's going to turn into a flamingo, then I'm going to need to change my entire wardrobe. I can't possibly co-ordinate just with what I have now!

Let me guess, they're your typical parents all up in your business, laying down parental law, think you can't make decisions on your own because of some legal age of majority. Right?

Oh no, my parents aren't like that. They usually come around to my point of view. But now they just keep fussing and thinking that if me and my friends start working again we'll end up in trouble. But I need clothes, and it's not like Nick went missing because of our jobs anyway.

Before I say anything else, maybe you should tell me what this work of yours entails.

It's all odd jobs, really. My friends and I have a job agency, just the six of us. Usually it's really boring things like mowing lawns and walking dogs and cleaning things for people. It's not fun at all, but every now and then we've gotten some really good, interesting jobs, like being extras in a TV commercial and performing a play. I'm always telling the other's that that's the kind of work we should be doing, but they never listen.

But it's even worse when we don't have any jobs at all, even the boring ones. Because then I have no money for anything.

So you're basically freelancers not specializing in any one thing. That's pretty cool. Keeps your options open and helps you develop damn good life experience, even if it does mean your income depends on the whims of the public.

But you're gonna have to excuse me for asking: What's so dangerous about it that your friend went missing?

Well I think it would be cooler if we got better jobs. Especially since I'm not really going to get noticed by any famous producers when I'm doing the paper route for The Pen.

Well we're always stumbling onto all these mysteries. Not on purpose, they just seem to happen. And then we end up in trouble, and sometimes it can get really scary. I'm always saying that we need jobs with less trouble, but we still end up with them anyway.

But that doesn't have anything to do with Nick. He says he went missing because he fell through a window into another world, where his soul turned into this thing called a dæmon and walks around as this kind of dog creature. And he couldn't get back, so everyone thought he was kidnapped. But now he is back, and it all turns out that him disappearing didn't have anything to do with our jobs at all! But Mum and Dad still won't listen.
