There's a difference between roughing it in buildings and roughing it in tents. You won't be sleeping on the dirt, and you'll have better shelter from the rain and wind.

I would think 'mature' the best word to use if you truly felt it necessary to indicate age. And your hypothetical has no bearing on this.
