shameless castmate search...!! (x-posted, naturally)
You're absolutely certain there was nobody better suited for this task?
[Obviously there was, so just give him a moment while he... braces himself? Alrighty then.
....
C'mon, kid.]
If I must say names, then obviously I'll mention Tenten and Gai-sensei. It would be [nice] disastrous, to say the least, to have them both present in the colony. But even then, it would be... pleasant, to see them again. That's selfish. It's also what you're looking for, isn't it? [This is hard.] Lee would love that. [And--]
Shikamaru would be useful. And for Hinata-sama's sake, I guess Shino... or anyone from her team-- Akamaru, even, would be a welcome sight. Anyone from the village would be. You know that. You also know the chances of ensnaring someone through begging in this place is slim at best. No, I'm not volunteering to go elsewhere to hunt down our friends. You've got enough to work on without these distractions. [Rude, son.] You didn't expect me to rattle off everyone's name, did you...? Whether they show up or not hardly depends on that.

no subject
[Well.]
[Guess who's sulking in the corner now.]
no subject
He said Shino's name before the dog's, so Neji can't feel too bad about it.
...
Damn you, Aburame, now what?] She's working in some flower shop. [Okay but Shino's bug don't... pollinate. Do they? Fuck's sake, man, say something...] Aburame. [Hello.]
no subject
And fair. In the past, Naruto has noticed the dog before Shino so there's one point to Neji... against the major blow he's just dealt to him. He's always been a little... (a little) sensitive about the issue.]
Neji. It is good to see you.
Although... [here we go] I cannot be sure whether the feeling is reciprocated or not.
[He is. so hurt.]
no subject
Okay, so he could have named more... names. And said the plea better, whatever the hell that meant. Big deal. Big whoop.
He bows his head because-] It is good to see you, as well. [That's sincere, yeah.]
To be honest, I didn't expect anyone to come and I've yet to get used to... remembering the possibility exists. [Which could have also been said better, yes, thanks for noticing. And why beat around the bush-?] Have you been doing anything, Shino? In these games?
no subject
... Only to darken once more at the reminder. His head bows in defeat.]
Three years... [what.] It has been that long since I've been able to join anyone.
[When accompanied by tens of thousands of his kikaichu, Shino is never truly alone. Still, it's nice to be able to speak with Neji once more so today he might be more cooperative than usual. Talkative, even. It has been a little lonely.]
Do you enjoy it? [Where you are now, he means.]
no subject
But gods is he glad fate never found it necessary to place him on a permanent team with this guy. It's. Probably not a nice thing to be distracted by, when he's supposed to be making nice with Hinata's friends. So Neji nods calmly at the new info. Three years of solitude ought to have been difficult, yes. Not even he would have enjoyed that.
Then his brows furrow just a little because, gods, what a loaded question.] I am adapting to the colony itself and am glad to be in Lee's and Hinata-sama's presence again, yes.
[No mention of Sasuke yet again. Suck it, Uchiha.]
The advanced technology has been interesting to learn and experience, save for the times we've all been dragged into ViViD's program, but its effects are hardly lasting.
no subject
[He's been sleeping this whole time and decided to finally wake up.]
no subject
He bows his head a little in greeting.] Been enjoying yourself, Shikamaru? [...doing nothing.]
no subject
[Truthfully she misses him, too, but his attempt to articulate the fact amuses her anyway.]
But Gai-Sensei? Really? You do know if he ever showed up it would be with a lot of hugs and crying and I don't think you're really sure of what you're asking here.
no subject
[What... more do you want from him, woman? But he's smiling anyway, in that way that he does, which means he's looking more relieved than anything. Now to figure out how to get around the 'hugs and crying' thing.]
You're acting as if I don't know the man as well as you do. I'm already sharing a living space with Lee, and as of recently, Lee's robotic double, so if I can avoid them through the worst of it I can find a way to manage Sensei as well. [By avoiding them, yes. Okay. Not the best plan. Look, coming here wasn't his idea, alright? Alright.]
no subject
It could be frustrating. Lonely.
She knew exactly why he asked for their Sensei, but she also couldn't just let him get away with it without some prodding okay.]
...Two Lees?
[Buuuuuuut mostly she's just curious how all three of them were still alive. Neji's patience must have leveled up.]
no subject
Feel his pain? Good. Okay, not quite 'good' but she's sane enough to understand and maybe sympathize and maybe that feels good, okay? And okay maybe he shouldn't have nodded either, because it wasn't exactly two Lees. More like.] He named it Metal.
[Like that explains everything. He sighs.]
CERES gifted the colony's residents with servants- robots- to make up for past offenses. Activating one has resulted in them taking on that person's mannerisms. And looks.
[Help him. Tenten. Tenten.] There doesn't seem to be trouble with them yet, save for the obvious, so I've been... trying to spend my time elsewhere. Until it blows over.
no subject
She's not completely heartless though- and Neji is the only mostly sane friend she has so loyalty compels her to sympathize instead of making his situation worse. Another bowlcut tipping the balance was completely unfair and she couldn't just leave him outnumbered and without support.
But she remembers that whole dying and giving the nice guy pose thing. That was not cool. He owes her double for this.]
Not like we haven't fought our own doubles before, even if it becomes a problem you two can handle it.
[UNWAVERING FAITH + 2]
What does it do though? Is it supposed to be helpful? A partner? Does it have any techniques even though Lee can't really use any? Is it armed? Traps? ...Does it have a laser arm?
[A robotic clone sounds hella sweet tbh she'd add all kinds of cool tricks and weapons to hers so why are you upset other than it's probably in spandex.]
no subject
But he nods again. Yes, he knows full well they can kick that thing's shiny metal ass. No, that doesn't mean it'd be his ideal way to spend a day. Especially not if he must deal with Lee's crying afterwards.
And then Tenten starts with the innocent questions at first, and Neji even opens his mouth to answer some. But then she goes off the deep end asking about laser arms and he decides that letting her stew in her own curiosity was punishment enough for. Y'know.] How should I know? [Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers.
Oh. But.] Lee also has an array of CYbuddies. [That's a stupid name and now he's said it aloud. Eugh.] He says he's tried to weaponize the octopus. [Neji why are you so stubborn and why don't you make sense for once in your god damned life.]
no subject
She doesn't believe for a minute that he allows a robotic clone to hang out around him and Lee without knowing every little thing about it (or, at least, without trying to figure it out). It was a risk, a safety concern, and no ninja worth their salt would just blindly accept such a thing in their lives. He's purposefully ignoring her questions to get a rise out of her.
And it's working.]
You should know because it's in your living space! I know you didn't just let some weird robot in your apartment or whatever without checking it out don't play dumb with me!
[MAYBE IF SHE'S LUCKY IT'LL WAKE UP IN KILL MODE AND SINGE ALL THAT STUPID HAIR OFF HIS HEAD.
Stamps foot.]
--Also nothing else you said makes sense. Why is Lee trying to arm an octopus. Or do you mean the Hachibi? He has a name you know, don't be rude.
[Are you sure you actually miss her Neji. Really. Really sure.]
no subject
and anyway. Big sigh. That long-suffering kind of sigh that would almost make one think Neji was actually the victim here if it weren't for the fact that he won. Yes. Good. His strategy worked. Also not good, because Tenten's now getting huffy.
Control yourself, jeez.]
The robots so far have only been able to emulate what the person who activated them has shown them. You'll have to ask Lee what, exactly, that means because he isn't taking the warnings to not spar with the thing seriously.
[And he doesn't want to entice the thing into battle?? Look. Tenten. Tenten. There's a reason Shikamaru was top on his wishlist, okay.] They're impossible to destroy, that's all I know. [Because guess what he tried to do with his own.
Before he pawned if off on Lee's girlfriend. But look at him being nice and polite and perfectly composed like a civilized person. Did Tenten just stomp her foot? That's hilarious.
That's also the little voice in the back of his head reminding him 'you're going to d i e' but whatever. Been there, done that, right? YOLO?] No, I meant an octopus. Its name is John. [No it's not but there's soo many little NeoPets running around to keep their names straight and. This is ridiculous and Neji is refusing to say anything else, apparently. Looking away a little now, just. Avoiding everything. That was a good talk, Tenten. Let's do it more often.]
no subject
She would assume, anyway.
He is so incredibly ornery and difficult to get information out of that for a moment she honestly contemplates taking him by the shoulders and attempting to shake the sass right out of him. It would probably result in the loss of chakra use in both her arms and a few days recovery but it is still very tempting.
Instead, Tenten takes a deep breath and considers what little he's told her. Maybe he's scared of the dumb things and doesn't want to admit it, hence the lack of decent intel. (Not that it matters, maybe, as she's not there to help or gather her own info but she's nosy and he's talking about weird shit so her curiosity is piqued.)
Eventually she just offers a mildly confused:]
John?
That's a weird name.
[For an octopus, in general. It's not like they'd ever known a John-sensei wandering around the village. Clearly things like fishcake whirlpool were much more normal.
ALSO LEE HAS A GIRLFRIEND?? WHY NOT GIVE THAT GOSSIP INSTEAD OF ROBOT CLONE IS SHE CUTE DOES SHE FIGHT]
no subject
He's still getting used to everything; he won't mind admitting that much. The following silence is appreciated, and he huffs out a not-laugh at her oh-so-important summarization of things so far. But of course he's himself and he's quick to sober up again.
John was the bunny's name.] Very few things in that world make any sense.
[He's not even talking about the damn CYbuddies anymore, and maybe he could do better with keeping the irritation out of his voice. Hell, at least it's not reaching his eyes. Hardly anything ever does, but. Well.] When we first arrive we're put into a genjutsu of sorts. It isn't. [He'd tried to dispel it, of course, with absolutely zero gain.] It's a virtual reality game- another sort of illusion that for some reason is popular entertainment. It was a dating. game. when I arrived. Then you're taken to the real world again, and you sit through a presentation that tells you your world's been destroyed.
..the sorts of people that have been brought there have to seem to have no discernible pattern to them. There's a world outside of the colony, of course, but I suppose it must be near impossible to traverse. CERES is in control of everything, and they ought to have measures in place to ensures things stay that way.
No, I haven't done much in terms of investigation yet. [Don't bitch at him for it.]
no subject
She should be concerned and everything else he said was interesting but it's such a ridiculous and out there thing to say and imagine that she can't really reign herself back in quickly enough to avoid annoying him. Again.
It's all terribly unbelievable and strange and she's kind of a bad person and that thought at least makes her wisely pretend he hadn't said such a thing and she hadn't sort of laughed at it.
It was kind of surprising he'd even brought up such an embarrassing thing in the first place and pressing for details was a good way to ensure he'd never tell her about it. BUT MAN IT'S TEMPTING.]
Seems like a lot for one person to investigate on their own.
[She might have enjoyed giving all of her teammates a hard time more often than not, but she was also acutely aware of their strengths, their capabilities. Tenten was practical (well... mostly), she didn't expect Neji to have all the answers all the time.
For as much as he touted his superiority maybe she should- but she doesn't expect the impossible from either of them, they'd figure things out as they were able and really didn't owe her any sort of report anyway. It was better if they erred on the side of caution, and she'd done the same in some of the places she'd ended up in.]
One of the last places I was in said that home had been destroyed too and you guys never showed up... at least you have Lee with you. Even if he's multiplying.
no subject
But soon it's Neji's turn to snort out a laugh, because it sure as hell hadn't been out of derision.] Of all the ways for him to multiply I suppose this is the least harmless to witness.
[Yes, he said that. No, he's not taking it back.
But anyway. Anyway. Worlds destroyed-] It must have been difficult. [He's sorry he hadn't been there for her, or at least with her, but it would be silly to say it because there was nothing that could have ever been done about it. A pause.] I promise we'll all work hard to return home. [Ah.] Or to restore it, so things can continue on as they should. At least, I will. I shouldn't speak for Lee or Hinata-sama. [Or that bastard Sasuke.]
Where have you been, then, in terms of these 'games'?
no subject
And laughter was better than approaching the topic of blame and longing and loneliness. It didn't take long in any of these various worlds to understand there was little choice in the whole thing, it simply was what it was.]
Mmmn- I've been in space! We were on a turtle shaped ship and got to explore a lot of weird planets. Gai-Sensei was there for awhile.
I was also in some sort of spirit... redlight district.
[He probably doesn't want details from that one.]
Oh. And Canada.
[It's been some time since she's been out and about around here and the Yondaime kind of took over while she got set aside.
ive mostly been on tumblr with bunbunBut she remembers friends coming and going. Being uncertain of the future and the state of their homes. Seeking answers and working with strangers in hopes of finding a way to fix things.
She's also painfully aware Neji won't really join them again back home and that sobers her up some.]
It wasn't always easy. I'm glad you're not alone there.
[They all deserved a little more time.]
no subject
He even tilts his chin up a fraction because of it, because of Tenten's laughter. My god, what a loser.
And he listens intently to her words, after. Quirks a brow high in question to whatever adventures of hers happened to take place in a red light district. But unfortunately he can't even take the time to judge that because (lbr, he'll do it anyway) there's something a little more interesting.]
Canada?
[He always latches on to the useless things, jfc. Try explaining to him that American football isn't quite the sport of heroics that he's imagining it to be. Anyway, the intrigue of other worlds is short-lived. Neji's a little surprised by his own lack of curiosity, if he'd be honest. Surely that wasn't a tell of him being closed minded, no.
He shakes his head.
Which of course-- he meant yes, he was glad he had company as well. It was just.] It's nice. I mean... [Ah yes, a confession cometh.] It's awkward. [Said so clear and plain there really wasn't a better word to encapsulate it all, Neji thinks.]
But we'll get better, and move forward.
[And despite himself, there's a lingering sidelong glance to Tenten.
BECAUSE GEE WOULDN'T IT BE NICE IF SHE JOINED US.]
no subject
But it was funny.
A shrug is offered instead of any real explanation. Sort of Canada. Not a real place, based on a real place. A version of him had been there and they'd had a cat, a dojo. It was all rather domestic when monsters weren't attacking them.
(It's funny to her, too, that they both seem to be picking up on the useless things to question.)]
Of course it's awkward.
[He'd died for one of them and broke both their hearts. Sasuke probably didn't give a shit either way but she knew Hinata and Lee were on the opposite side of the spectrum and probably cared too much, probably looked at him with grief still in their eyes. Neji had never cared much for pity or anything that could be filed under the over emotional and she couldn't imagine he'd had a very comfortable time settling back in with their friends.
She would have been angry at him. (still was really. stupid.) BUT MAYBE SHE WILL SHOW UP AND BE ANGRY AT HIM IDK]
Still better than not having anyone.
okay but if I ask you to marry me what would your answer be
Hn. Not his fault. Not like he hadn't tried to explain it to them already.
It wasn't his fault that they weren't getting it, okay? Okay.] It is. I think they're enjoying their time in the colony, as well. It's been difficult at times, I suppose, but.
You know them. [What the hell is that even supposed to mean, Neji.....]
buy me dinner first you little shittebayo
SHE ARGUED HOW GREAT IT WAS TO NARUTO AND GAARA AND YOU LET HER DOWN. Useless.]
I know them.
[For someone who could accurately describe what every little twitch of an eyebrow meant about someones inner thoughts Neji was really fucking awful at explaining how people were feeling.
Yet she still kind of knows what he means. Lee was easily enough shaken (usually literally) from his more negative moods and had probably designated himself their youth cheerleader in Sensei's absence. And Hinata had a quiet strength that she didn't let out nearly enough that would make her rally, that would have her supporting them all in her own way.
Yeah. Tenten knew them. Which is why she was glad they were there with Neji because he had the emotional capacity of a turnip and would struggle to let anyone else in to help him.]
Are there monsters or anything? It could always be worse. Then again it's kind of fun getting to fight now and then too.
[She's helping.]
no subject
Also, Tenten dug her own hole there. Don't drag him into this. He fuckin' WARNED YOU. Also.
He isn't the one who needs help, thanks.]
Of course there are monsters. [Said like he already explained this to her, and then he remembers that okay maybe he hadn't. So Tenten gets that purposely patient sort of look for a while, and he hopes she doesn't throw something at him for it because he didn't mean it to be irritating-- buts gods knew everything could irritate her when she decides to get in her moods. He's just wondering what to say, damn it. Or if he should just shrug her off and say 'See for yourself'.
But that's a great way to have to dodge a kunai. Or worse, her threats of things to come later. So.] Maybe in the jungle.
[Don't kill him yet--] I've heard there are creatures lurking in a city below the colony. And of course whatever abominations those in charge of manipulating ViViD can dream up become a reality when you're forced into that world, so they must count for something.
Mostly Cerealia is inhabited by androids. Robotic... persons. And aliens, though so far relations seem to be peaceful. There's hardly any talk of working to find a way back home, it's-- [Infuriating, judging by the way he's gone and squared his jaw. It's--] frustrating, that everyone's so easily distracted.
[Himself included. Yeah. Sure. Why not.]
no subject
Lots of these weird places don't have monsters Neji! It's not a stupid question but that is certainly a stupid answer and briefly she wonders why she had ever missed him in the first place, eyebrow twitching in irritation and serious willpower going into not rolling her eyes right out of her head.
It was less that she was easily irritated and more that he was ungodly rude and huffy and full of himself. obv.]
Aliens... I think I've had my fair share of that nonsense.
[IS YOUR GREAT GREAT GRANDMA THE MOON HYUUGA THERE. THEY FUCKED UP OUR WORLD YOU KNOW. ALIENS CAN SUCK IT.]
And people get complacent, you know? Especially if they really believe their home is gone. Might as well enjoy what they've got 'cause it might be all that they've got.

But Neji can't just go and diss his own face. Or maybe it's referencing the whole him dying thing. Ah.
What a conundrum.] That doesn't make this any less unpleasant.
[-!] But you being here is unsurprising, at least. It's good to see you, Naruto.
no subject
Everyone wants to talk to Neji. Not because he's dead but because they just want to talk to him.]
I guess it's unpleasant to be dragged around by our muns but c'mon, you got to talk to a bunch of our friends, right? [That's not unpleasant.
Unsurprising? Oh man.] Am I getting to be that predictable?
[He'll have to work on that.]
no subject
[Even if they have all been salty as f--
anyway. Neji nods. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.]
See if from a different angle, Naruto. Reliability isn't a bad thing.
no subject
[...Naruto, Shino was here first so why does his name go last?
Because he almost forgot him.He laughs.] Well, I guess it's okay to be reliable. But I can't be predictable all of the time.
oh my god so many typos in my last comment haha...h.a....
Rude, much?
Naruto, of course, not him for not having caught on earlier. No, definitely not. He sighs and would have rolled his eyes if it weren't for the fact that, well, he just doesn't.] I doubt you'll have to ever worry about that. [But every once in a while, it was nice.
--He's using that word entirely too much. But he did get to speak with Tenten. And others. And Naruto. And.] Just out for some fresh air, Naruto, or were you hoping to surprise someone? ['Someone'...]
shhh, if we don't say anything we can pretend they aren't there
I mean, bugs. And Naruto's seen what those bugs can do to a person. It's not pretty.
And yeah okay he's a little rude. Maybe more than a little.] Someone's gotta keep everyone on their toes.
[Here's Naruto - ready and willing to step up into the job.]
Nah, my mun's been debating sending me back to Cerealia. So I thought I'd come hang out. My mun maybe trying to see if we could catch a bunch of people to come with me. Plus she's got some thoughts about when she wants to take me from.
no subject
That was more than just a little interesting. --the whole bit about the mun, not the bit about Naruto being his (predictable) self. Picking up the slack, as always, welcome or not as it was.
Consider Neji's interest piqued, because his brows draw together that little bit that they sometimes do and there's no reason for the small frown on his lips either, outside of pensive curiosity. And anyway, with an owlish tilt of his head his lips quirk up at the corners now. You see-] Is that right?
Should I be looking forward to addressing you as 'Hokage-sama'?
[It wasn't blasphemous, was it? Treason, somehow? To hope to see an important promise realized, just once.]
no subject
A casual laugh and both hands go behind his head.] Not yet. I don't wanna be too much older than everyone else.
[Because how weird would that be? Especially if he was a lot older than his wife.]
She's thinking about maybe some time after I lost my arm or after I take a trip to the moon. [How does he say "after I started dating Hinata" - especially to Neji of all people.]
no subject
Because- ah- he is going to be the youngest of their group one of these days, huh? And he'll stay that way. Neji smirks at that, not at all wry. It could be funny.
How those in Cerealia have put up with him for so long (a month) is beyond his comprehension.
Won the war.
Lost an arm.
Went to the moon.
Neji had no right to know any of this. So thank god for dear_mun space, otherwise this might get long! Believe it. So how would Naruto tell him he finally grew a brain and acknowledged Hinata? Carefully, Neji would hope.] Either way, Hinata-sama would be beside herself with joy. You'd have my thanks for that.
--she wouldn't even mind your hair, I'd think. [HE SEES THAT POST OKAY look at them narutos ahh]
no subject
Maybe he'll be the youngest of their group but he's always going to be smarter and more mature than some of them. A voice of reason when everyone else gets emotionally unstable.
When he comes to Cerealia, Naruto will tell Neji all kinds of things. Things about the future and those conversations are sure to be filled with lots to think about.
Definitely going to talk about it carefully. Because he does not feel like ending up in the hospital.] Yeah, leaving her... leaving them hadn't been my idea but I'm determined to come back. They're the reason why I'm coming back sooner than expected.
[Ruffles his hair.] I think that too. It's just hair. [NOW THAT NARUTO REALIZES THINGS THAT WERE ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM he knows that how his hair looks isn't going to change Hinata's feelings for him.
Us Narutos gotta stick together.]
/wanders right on in
