I've had many losses too. Though I am from a time later than the one you are originally from, death seems to be a frequent visitor, perhaps more frequently than it visits the modern era.

Family has been very helpful I was so distraught after my husband died that I did not even want to go on. I didn't see a reason to. Without him, I felt that the only person who truly understood me was gone. My family helped me realize that the choice to go on living was mine. I had a son to think about. I couldn't give up on my life, even if Matthew was gone.
