[ He trails off and shakes his head. Why bother bringing up the past? Their Dad was an asshole and he's dead. Talking about it now isn't doing them any favors. ]

[He didn't actually mean it that way. Daryl ducked his head and shifted his weight, shaking his head.]

Only thing about it that's anything like Woodbury is it's got some walls and decent houses.

(And, the process of writing it was actually sort of fun, every one of her eyerolls was accompanied by a wry smile and, once or twice, tossing balled up paper at his head. She's half convinced Merle added some of the cruder language just to see if she'd write it, knowing Daryl'd see that in her handwriting and shake his head in wistful humor.)]

About as you'd expect. He's okay. [Always grieving, probably guilty yet again, but managing.] We got a junk food section in the temple now, that helps his mood.

And by junk food, I hope that means some booze. 'cause he and I polished off that damn moonshine of his in one sittin'. Don't think he had anymore. And if he did, he was holdin' out on me -- that sonuvabitch.

The last of that was gone a little after you were. He wouldn't skimp on your last hurrah. [It's strange, being nice to each other, or some sarcastic, talk-around version of nice. Even weirder, this isn't the first time she's hoped that sometime, Merle can make his way back to the magic city they're calling home, for now.] But I was talking about burgers and fries, funnel cakes, all that stuff that turns your plate clear. You guys eat a lot of that, before?

[Is she actually asking Merle Dixon about his life because she cares to know about it? Wonders never cease.]
