[apping at eway again]

Every time I think we're done with this you always push me back in.

[He sighs a moment, shaking his head.]

I know you think seeing Alex again will be a great plot twist but he shot me. The reunion won't be pretty- I'll either punch him in the face or he'll shoot me. I honestly don't think the odds are in my favor on this.

But I guess once you've made your mind there's no other option. I really wish you would reconsider though.

We did have fun back there, didn't we.

[Getting strangled, getting shanked, getting shot by an old college buddy. Good times! Gooooood times.]

I did what I had to. [You think Jay would've had the guts to cave that bit of Tim's leg in? No. He wouldn't have done it, and somebody had to.

Alex laughs, a mirthless, scornful snort of hot air.]

"No-gun policy"? Buddy, there's a walking raccoon that just goes around handing them out.

I fixed things. You would've just spread it to more people.

[Hell if he has to justify himself to a dead man. Dead in the past and dead in the future if Alex has any say in it. Ha. Ha.

He smirks coldly.]

Looks like past me had some good instincts.

[Alex's hands ball into fists and he advances. You watch your whore mouth, Jay, or he'll sink a punch into it. He can deflect jabs at his sanity from now until the cows come home, but if he ever mentions Amy again...]

And what were you doing? Huh? [He spits out the words, scathing.] You were just making it worse. Spreading it everywhere. Sharing it with the world.

[He keeps coming, glaring, expression cold.] You think I wanted to do that? You think I had a choice?

[Crack.

Alex's fist hits the nearest wall.]

Shut up.

[There's a vein throbbing in his forehead. He shouldn't let himself get riled up by this, this little scrap of nobody he knew way the hell back in college. Thinks he's got the moral high ground, does he?]

If you'd just left well enough alone and stopped nagging me, maybe this never would've happened.

But no. I had to clean up your goddamn mess, because you had to dig up everyone's goddamn skeletons.

[This time.

This time Alex doesn't bother with the pleasantries. He just hurls one right for Jay's jaw, his teeth clenched. His knuckles still ache from the first impact, but he doesn't give a shit.]

You - goddamn - moron. You have no idea what you're doing. All you ever do is just - flounder, running in blind against things you don't understand.

[He adopts a high, mocking tone of voice.]

"I'm Jay, I'm going to explore this abandoned building at night, all alone!" Why don't you take a friend, Jay? Why don't you ask someone to come with you, Jay?

[He drops the pretense, expression deathly cold once more.]

Oh, right. Because you don't have anyone.

I was fixing it.

[He grinds out the words so they hang over the confrontation like a pall, takes that punch and doubles over even if it's like getting a wad of iron to the gut.]

You know about it. And that's how it works. It spreads. You have to kill everyone -

[His hostility doesn't fade, though it's, perhaps - marred a little, clouded over by something else.]

- and then yourself. That's the only way any of this stops. And you - [The word practically morphs into a snarl.] You had to drag everyone right back into it, didn't you?

[Alex turns away with a low, angry noise of frustration, pacing like something caged. He can't possibly explain himself to this - this idiot. This moron. This stupid, stupid - friend he used to have, who tried to take up his sword and should've instead fallen on it.

He can't explain nursing the tender hope that maybe if everyone else died - if everyone else died, maybe then he'd be safe. The ends justify the means. He fixes things.

Like a hero.]

Yeah? [He arches a cold eyebrow, his tone dripping with sarcasm.] I wonder what Tim would have to say to that.

["What have you been hiding from me?"]

[Shouldn't have shared all those memories with the world, Merrick. Alex's smile is ice-thin, humorless.]

All this time, I thought you of all people would've learned. You're gonna need something more than a little switchblade if you want answers from anyone.

[He knows that feeling. God but he knows it. Everything slips out until you fix yourself on a singular goal to the exclusion of all else. Everything else.]

You're sure about that?

[No more pleasantries, not even false ones. The smirk slides off his face like oil.]

That's how it starts. [He taps one finger against the side of his head.] And that's how it ends.

Oh yeah. [He flings out a hand in a scornful, exaggerated gesture.] You're not like me. You're different.

[What's that thing they say about dying a hero or living long enough to see yourself become the blah blah blah?]

See, I would've been a lot smarter than pasting every little thing I did on the Internet. So, you know. There is a difference between us.
