[A nearby teenager with unusually grey skin and yellowed eyes spoke up in a British accent that was surprisingly articulate for someone who looked so much like the walking dead.]

Yeah, well I'm not too surprised, considering my mun wants to put me in a game, despite the fact that she's very well aware of what happens if I miss a dose of my medication.

[A short pause, then he realizes how she'd likely react to seeing...well, him, considering that she said they were in a zombie apocalypse, instead of coming out of one.]

And before you go for your gun, I'm not rabid. [He couldn't say he wasn't a zombie, even if that wasn't the term he'd usually use, but he wasn't currently a threat.] I come from a time and place where there's a treatment, even if I wouldn't precisely call it a cure.

In my experience, Z's don't tend to talk, so you don't need to worry. I know someone who's kinda like you. His name is Murphy, and he was given an experimental vaccine that keeps him from going full zombie. We've been trying to get him to a lab in California where they can use his blood to make more, but we've been through all kinds of hell along the way.

[Well, that was promising, actually. There were plenty of people who would ignore the talking after seeing quite how he looked.]

How much of a supply does he have left?

[Because if it worked like Kieren's did, it wouldn't go too well if it was a long trip and they didn't have a stock of it. But she said vaccine, not treatment, so maybe it worked a little different than he got, since his was given after he'd been undead for quite some time.]

No, not his blood. The neuro--the stuff he was given that makes him like he is.

[Oh.]

Oh my god that would be so much easier. We could just take one of the doses to California. But no. He got one shot and now we're stuck with the pain in the ass.

It's been a couple of way too interesting months.

What sort of side effects? I've noticed a few myself. Flashbacks. Starting to feel things again, in bits and pieces. Like how my eyes were uncomfortable when I wore my contacts for a few months.

...I think we might be talking about different things. Murphy got the shot before he got bit. The bites didn't kill him, and he hasn't gone full Z. You wouldn't be able to tell that looking at him, though. He's even starting to get the eyes. And he's got some sort of psychic thing going with the Zs.

Yeah. Definitely different things.

[Definitely different worlds, too. It was interesting, though, hearing about someone going through the opposite process than he was. He wondered if his own eyes would change to be more human, given enough time.]

I wasn't bitten by anything. I was rabid for five years before I was treated with neurotriptaline. It's been making me more human. Don't have any sort of psychic connection with anything, though.

I've never heard of neurotriptaline. I have heard of an herbal treatment that seemed to have an affect on Zs...a strain of marijuana, actually.

What I don't understand, though, is how you became a zombie if you weren't bit?

Biting has nothing to do with it, at least not where I'm from. Everyone who died during a certain time span came back. Doesn't matter how.

I didn't know that. I knew sheeps brains get us a bit of a buzz, and there's a blue pill that makes us go instantly rabid, but haven't heard of marijuana working. Then again, I haven't tried it, either.

Ah, I see. That happens where I'm from, too. Everyone who dies turns, so long as they have an intact brain. Guess I had assumed you didn't die, seeing as you're talking and all.

It was a special strain of marijuana they called "Z weed." The growers used Zs as compost. Believe me, I have seen some freaky stuff, but that greenhouse takes the cake. We were run off by some seriously bad dudes, though, so I don't know if there's any more testing going on.

Yeah. I remember everything about before. And...I remember a bit from when I was rabid, too. Flashes of memories that are really sharp, but the rest is mostly a blur. The longer I go, though, the more I remember about what I...[He swallowed, thinking about what he'd done. The people he'd eaten.] About the thing I did while I was rabid.

[Her voice goes a little softer, still with a gritty weariness of a soldier who's seen and done too much, but also with a certain gentleness]

Where I'm from at least, zombies don't know or act on anything but hunger. Whatever happened, it wasn't you.

Our worlds have that much in common.

[He'd heard it wasn't his fault before, of course. That was the whole point of the treatment center making them repeat that they were 'a pds sufferer, and not responsible for what happened in their untreated state'. He knew he'd had no control of what had happened, no knowledge of who he even was.]

I know I couldn't do anything to stop it, and that I wasn't in control, but I still remember doing it.

[It was still his body doing those things, trying to survive in it's feral state.]
