You know how people don't really like vampires? Living people, I mean. 'cause we bite them?

Do you reckon baking them a cake would help? I'm getting pretty lonely, just by myself, no one to talk to, no one to show my new outfits to... maybe if I bake some of those cupcake things with frosting and chocolate I'll finally get some compliments on my hair? [ He smiles hopefully. ]

I'm not sure a cake will free people from the fear of being drained of their blood, pal.

Yeah... but they'll feel better before it happens. [ Austin beams, trying not to think too much about biting this guy. He was trying to distract himself with the cake thing but it's no use, really, he's still hungry. ]

[whittling]

Oh, right, of course. I'm going to bite you and drain you of your blood but you're going to be happy about it because, guess what! I made you a cake! [ Eddie is dripping sarcasm, and also keeping his distance, thank you very much. He's heard enough vampire stories. ]

[ Austin bursts out in laughter. ] You're making it sound way worse than it is! It doesn't hurt when I only take a little.

[ Keeping his self-control is always tricky, though. ]

Do you know how to bake a cake? [ Another thing he didn't really think through. ]

[whittling]

Just so you know -- bite me and I rip off your head. [ a tight smile. ]

I haven't baked a cake since I was a kid, and even then I was only helping my mom. And by helping I mean holding the cup for her or stirring with the big spoon.

I won't bite you! I only bite people who like being bitten. Lots of humans want a vampire biting them. [ That's Austin for 'it happened at a goth club a couple times'. ]

I bet it's not that hard, could say I'm throwing a cupcake party or something... then I'll make lots of new friends. [ Maybe his best bet is trying to meet other vampires but there's a big chance he'll only end up annoying them. Or blind them with his clothes. ]

...A cake. Really?

Yeah... or a hug or something. Or a kiss. [ He's trying to flirt. That means he's also trying to bite you. ]

[Yeah, he's going to turn up the collar of his bite-proof duster here, just in case.]

Points for trying, I suppose. Most vamps don't try for the friendly stuff.

It's more exciting if I'm friendly. [ Despite not being the brightest vampire out there, he's reasonably successful whenever he picks the right targets, mostly girls in the goth scene even if he himself prefers male victims. It's no fun being hungry and they're actually willing! It's amazing. ]

Don't bite everyone I meet, y'know... you don't have to look so scared! I bet you're some kind of vampire hunter, right?

Not paranoid if they're really out to get you. And seeing as how I've managed to piss off all three Vampire Courts...

[He shrugs. He knew, from his half-brother, that not all vampires were completely terrible.]

Wizard, actually. But had more than enough dealings with the vampires.

Vampire Courts? [ After the vampire who turned Austin was killed, he'd only ever be on his own. It did get lonely, though, as is probably obvious by now, he finds joy in the little things.

Right now, he's all kinds of thrilled to be meeting a genuine wizard. ]

It'd really cheer me up if you did a magic trick. [ Because the 'dealings with vampires' thing definitely shouldn't scare him or anything. Magic tricks! ]

Yeah. There's three types of vampires where I'm from. There's the Black Court, which are a bunch of walking corpses straight out of Stoker, the Red Court, which are a bunch of bat demons in flesh suits, and the White Court, which feed off life energy instead of blood.

[The first two are said more bitterly. The Black and Red Courts had or had tried to do great harm to people he cared about.

Still, a small grin.]

Don't suppose it's hurt.

[He holds up a hand.]

[At the word, a ball of fire appears, floating above his palm.]

[ Honestly? Those sound pretty scary to Austin as well... he's more the old-fashioned type of vampire, using his charm and looks to win his victims' trust, though mostly he's really caught up in the WIZARD A REAL WIZARD OHMYGOSH thing right now. ] A bat in a flesh suit doesn't sound pretty... you're lucky you ran into me instead! [ His mental image is probably much worse than it actually is, Austin's childlike imagination sometimes gets the better of him. ]

Wow...! That's genius. Don't get that near my hair though. [ Vampires probably shouldn't wear that much hairspray. ]

Well, yeah! Who doesn't like cake?

[It sounded reasonable enough to Rory who, of course, being a vampire himself was really not the best judge of what balanced out potentially biting people.]

I know! Weird people, maybe. Even looking at cake is pretty cool.

[ Austin recognizes a fellow vampire and flashes him a fangy grin. ]

I love your hair! Can I pet it?

[Rory looks a bit confused and baffled by that response.]

Thanks? And I think I'd rather not be petted, thanks.

[it seems like "vampire" flew right out his mind at the mention of food. because priorities.]

Yeah... you know, frosting, sprinkles. Would you go to a vampire party if they had a bunch of cake?

[ Maybe his plan wasn't a dumb plan. He just needed the right humans. ]

Yes. [resolute and with no hesitation. but wait, what kind of party was that?

he continues thoughtfully] One of my friends was considered a vampire, so it wouldn't exactly be new.

You're friends with a vampire? [ Austin gasps, ]

And he never tried to bite you?

I mean, you're definitely invited to my party!

Oh, he bit me. But I didn't get turned or anything. It was all a misunderstanding! He's not really--

[he brightens] Really? Thank you! [he extends a gloved hand] I'm Allen Walker.
