The ground starts to tremble and a blue white light rises around her.]

[ Instinctively, he ducks. Good thing too, because the lightning slashes across the air right above his head just a moment later.

And he's darting forward, grabbing Jenny by the neck into a headlock. Grips her tight. ]

Suck it up and deal, girlie girl. [ An old, old nickname. Maybe unfitting for how he growled it out. ] You're too hold to be throwing fits like that.

Wha-- guh! For an old man he's fast, and pretty damned strong. And that headlock is not exactly giving her a lot of freedom to work with. He's strong enough to do real damage if he wanted to, but he was just containing her, and she knew it.

The glow faded and she grumbled at him, drawing in breath as deep as she could given his hold on her.] Technically....

[ Another flick. ]

[ Both the squirming and the hugging back is softening his grin, turning it into a more sincere smile rather than a bloodthirsty thing.

Still, he snorts again. ]

You know what's weird about this whole thing? [ Pause. ] There's a Sparks in this woman's head too. I've never seen her, but I know that she's not coming out here either.

[Well, brat as she might be she has good reason to love her dads. They put up with a lot.]

Not surprising. [Shrug] She's me, and I'll be the next me. Newer, cooler, better but still me. So who wouldn't want me up there? [A gentle tap to that masked head]

[ Don't be an idiot; this has nothing to do with 'putting up with' you. You're their girl, and that's all that matters.

He cocks his eyebrow. ]

Maybe the bit 'bout there being two of Sparks existing at the same time. [ Just a little bit dry.

Then, more soberly: ] You're not her, you know.

I am her, and I'm me. [That meant she had a responsibility and in a way a destiny. Her job was to ensure that things didn't go off the rails in her time. And sooner or later she'd die doing it, maybe she had her full term, maybe she didn't. But if she didn't the whole place was in deep. It's a lot to take on your shoulders when your born.]

But mainly I'm me, and I have a family.

[ Well. That's a hell of a thing to say, and Midnighter knows exactly what she means. And he's laughing - a low chuckle - as he shakes his head. ]

I'd say that Apollo and I grabbed you and raised you for the sake of the century, but that'd be lying. And I don't do that.

[ Both the 'for the greater good' and the 'lying' bit.
