[ Ha! The comment would merit a quick huff to try to hold back a laugh, although, Barry knew there was much truth to those words. ]

Ah, you'll understand when you settle down one of these days and have one of your own. [ A bit of a tease on his end as well even if it hardly seemed like there would ever be time for that.

Jill's words that followed dug up a sigh. ]

Yeah... [ the words fell out a bit defeated. ] I suppose you're right. [ but... ]

Just hope she hasn't got into too much trouble. [ like large mutated monsters with super-human strength kind of trouble, you know, just the usual things a dad would worry about. ]

[ He's not exactly a dad to her; he's more a mentor and trusted friend, but damned if he hasn't treated her like she was less than half her age at times. It's something she appreciates and values as much as she might detest it on some days. ]

Think I'm more a dog-parent kinda gal. Assuming I ever retire.

[ Which is to say that she'd rather keep this up until she dies, either until she's physically unable to fight or dies out in the field. It's something she's pretty alright with, even accepted long before now. ]

Hey, I'm usually right, right? [ Except when it comes to backing herself into a trap. Then again, they all still fall for it every now and then. She'll take monsters over the classic spiked ceiling just about any day. ] Whatever's come her way, I'm sure she gave it a good right-hook -- or kneedrop, if I've a say in it. Keep on worrying like this and you won't live to be a dogfather.

[ Just as shameless as him, she chuckles over her own (not very good) joke. ]

[ He'd chuckle a bit. The thought of any of them retiring did seem like a joke in itself. Something always comes up, especially in this type of a job. Ah, but yes, yes Jill was usually right and a good voice of reason, sans a few traps from time to time – not any he had to do with of course. ]

Yeah...You're right on being right. [ and right onto the next thing, about Moira's fighting...? ]

[ He'd put a hand to the back of his head thinking a bit. ] Well, I did try my best to teach her a thing or two about fighting. I hope she was taking notes. [ Even if as it may be she didn't seem like she ever was paying much attention to anything he did or said, not after... well, things happened. But what's this? A joke? Oh Barry can't refuse a good (or bad) joke. ]

Ha! A dogfather... I sure wouldn't want to miss out on that.

[ There was always a reason. For them, at least. It was personal. Not just Umbrella and not just Wesker, not just the loss of their friends and their homes. Barry had seen more than Chris had, after all. He'd watched the city be decimated when he came for her (something she'll forever be grateful for). That kind of memory doesn't easily fade. As long as bioterrorism existed, there would be another Raccoon City, another Matsed, another Kijuju. Another Zabytij, Tall Oaks, or Lanshiang. ]

Good thing I'm around to keep your head screwed on straight!

[ She understands, though. She gets it. To protect something (someone) you love. There's a thin line between being overprotective, encouraging, or holding them back. Sometimes what you do doesn't work out the way you'd like for it to. ]

Yeah, well, maybe it's about time you let me take a shot at it. You and Chris always seem to forget not everyone's a giant bear! [ She'd been pretty tough back in STARS, but she'd really honed her fighting style to work for her size afterward. ] Although you've got a lot on your plate these days, backseat parenting an imaginary dog might be overkill.

[ A small fidget; unlike her. She rubs at her nape, gestures some with her other hand as she speaks. ]

Though, ah. Any advice would be appreciated. Chris and I have been sent somewhere with Natalia and I'm not sure we're qualified for more than the cool aunt and uncle that teaches you how to throw knives...

[ Which is to say, it's going to happen. ]

[ Ha! Yes, it was always good that Jill was around for that. Someone had to do it after all if he couldn't always do it himself. He'd freeze for a moment thinking about her taking a shot at teaching Moira a thing or two about fighting...and the giant bear comment... ]

You can never be too prepared these days – especially for giant bears! [ Hey it's not like wild animals were totally out of the picture just yet even if they seemed few far in between in the neck of the woods they usually ended up in. Although, a woman's touch never hurt, maybe Moira would even listen to her. ]

It's not a bad idea though. Maybe she'll listen to you better than her old man. [ Figuratively speaking about the old man part of course, though he wouldn't mind being a few years younger these days.

If her asking for 'advice' wasn't enough to stop him in his tracks, her bringing up Natalia was. ]

Ah, you and Redfield playing house? [ a tease because he just couldn't pass up the opportunity. ]

Kids will wander into all kinds of trouble if you're not careful. Natalia's a good kid though... [ – depending on timeline. But this Barry's seen only the good side. ] I doubt she'll be giving you and Redfield much of a hard time. Kid just needs someone to look out for her. Between the two of you, think you and Redfield are more than qualified for that.

[ At a certain point, it's unavoidable. She can understand having wanted to shield her as much as he can, but she's involved in all of this, too. She has been for a long time. And a charged punch or two just isn't going to cut it -- not all the time, anyway. ]

No, I suppose you can't! [ Perhaps literally at some point, even. Might be a little too soon to bring up teaching her to skin an animal and butcher it, but from what Jill's heard that's something she learned on her own. ] Think she might be willing to listen a bit better now to her old man, too. Just remember to suggest, not order. That's what makes a young girl's blood boil. And, from what I gather, a young man's too.

[ She'd heard stories of Chris back in the Air Force. Seemed to be a gut reaction, sometimes. But both he and Moira seemed to have mellowed out. Not that she'd bring it up, considering the implication with the former and the need to rebel from the latter. ]

Ha, sorry. We're in completely different buildings. He's in the same one as her, different floor. [ And she evades the question with as much grace as dodging a knife. ] Yeah, I... guess that's a thing, huh? She doesn't seem to be the sort that needs a lot of attention, but I also don't think I'd feel too great about myself if I didn't watch over her. Rooms're big enough, I can probably set up a place for her... ugh. I don't know. Just that I'm used to caring for myself and work being my biggest concern.

[ Worry is a good sign, though, right? It means she's at least aware of the situation and that it might not go over well. Being conscientious might make her overbearing. And if Jill's not being mild, she can be pretty overbearing. ]

[ He chuckles a little. ]

You know if something happened to her meant something happened to Claire.

I don't think ANYONE wants me involved because someone hurt my sister.

[ It's his way of saying she'll be fine ]

[ Leave it to Chris. The thought would bring up a small chuckle of his own knowing what that meant. ]

Only thing worse than one mad man is two of them. Pity the poor bastard that has to get that kind of an ass-kicking. [ He'd shake his head at that taking a more serious tone for his next words.]

I dread the thought of something happening to either of them. [ Naturally they were all like family and he'd be equally upset if anything happened to any one of them. ]

They'll be fine. They're survivors.

[Mun still has to play it!]

That they are. Thanks for that, Redfield. [ To say the least it never hurt to be reminded every once in a while when in the heat of the moment – or when having a dad moment. ]

[Chris pats his shoulder.]

[Chris shakes his head and chuckles quietly. Barry's always been the kind to care deeply about his kids. Some things never change.]

Moira's tough. She'll be okay.

I appreciate the vote of confidence for Moira, Redfield. [ even if that still won't stop him from worrying. Dads and all. ]

Just hope she hasn't gotten into too much trouble.
