I knew it was coming; I'd heard about this long before that article even appeared. And you didn't believe me. You figured the government wouldn't allow such a thing to occur.

Let me fill you in on a little secret.

The Mayans were right about the End of the World, though their instruments were a little off. They weren't entirely sure what kind of "end" they were prophesying, but they were aware that something was going to happen that would change the world forever.

It wasn't a literal end of the world as we know it, but an end to how we talk to one another. The end of communication, the end of our privacy.

Not that you or many others have it. Idly typing away your lives on social networking sites, sharing your personal information on a whim, blissfully unaware that someone is taking note, that someone is watching all that you say and do. All the better to pinpoint you. The fact that you're shocked at major internet providers that will be watching everything you do online is simply ridiculous.

They've always been watching. It's no secret. You've just been too blinded to see the truth.

[...what.]

You know. I think that was too crazy even for me.

Not necessarily! It's not a real crisis until there's panic in the streets, total anarchy in the government, and disco is reintroduced as mainstream.

And so far, I see no disco.

See? That's the kind of spirit I like to see! You better not be getting my hopes up, Vic!

Why can't you do both? [his already unpleasant, creepy voice becomes shrill and whiny with petulance.] You know it's been so long since we've hung out. Don't those long midnight walks we used to have mean ANYTHING to you? If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to smash my heart into a zillion tiny pieces.

[long walks that may or may not have even happened, but pffft - details. who needs 'em.]

I can pretend to be interested. Isn't that what's really important?

[oh look, a crazy person. nothing unusual there.]

They really let anyone out of asylums these days, don't they?

[tough shit.]

Mh, I don't think so. Didn't your doctor teach you manners?

Then you shouldn't act like it. What do you have to gain from ranting like this? It's already difficult enough to believe.

[Chuckles.]

The government doesn't need a warrant or permission to watch the networks. If they wanted to, they'd do so already. It'd spare the pain of rabble-rousing individualists.

Privacy is a tyranny in of itself. The way I see it, we're promoting openness, nothing is hidden, nothing is sacred. Embrace it.

Nonsense, everything is just as it seems.
