True Detective | Rust Cohle

You're takin' my quotes and making them awful literal. Condensed in their inherent life span. When I say we're "bound to repeat ourselves", I meant it more like... y'know, over decades. Lifetimes. Not you just typin' out a wall of nihilistic vomit and treating the backspace key like a stimulant button til you birth somethin' you're happy with.

You won't create that thing you imagine. The right words won't be there. You're not me, I'm not you. Best case scenario, you find a hook somewhere in all this, lure a few fish, and maybe feel like you've accomplished something here. What you're snuffing out so delicately with blissful ignorance is that this hobby revolves almost entirely around extremely temporary, fleeting pleasures.

A meme here.

A stint in some game there.

None of it seems to last. Those that manage it either do so by the grace of some wordsmith deity, or by dragging their hapless beast through the fields til it's running on bloodied stubs. Idles out. Nice memory, but otherwise sucked dry.

It's not mine to understand. I get that. You'll do your thing as you always do, and for now, I'll sit in for the ride.

Maybe ask Marty how much fun I am in the passenger seat though, before we get comfortable.

I know the portion of your suffering. How things molder in gestation.

Yes. There's dignity in silence, but it's hard to bear. Time gives way to longing.

I've not found a way. To be free of desire is a desire in itself.

[She considers the linear framework of his face.]

A person, needs a reason for being. Do you have one?
