You don't say. [Oh, Rose. Sure you want to do this? With this Doctor? You're not going to like him...]
[He looks towards the ceiling, gesticulating at it.] Threats don't work on me, you know that. Especially not when your only bargaining chip is a crazed fertility goddess, which, I confess, I'm curious about.
Difficult to say for certain; it's still too early to tell. [Probably best not to make a habit out of it though.] That's not to say it wasn't necessary. I needed her for a thing.
A...thing? Oh, we're good at those aren't we, future self. Oh, that's new. Future self. I won't get to say that much, will I? Were you talking to your mundane all night about....things?
Setting out the terms of this little relationship of ours. [His expectations are higher than they used to be, considerably more demanding. Never thought you'd turn into such a pain, did you, Doctor?] There was a lot to talk about. Hardly my fault.
[Pointedly~] Certainly no excuse to be throwing me into the arms of a fertility goddess and expecting me to make it back in one piece. If I'd known she was going to be this petty, I would never have agreed to this arrangement in the first place.
No, no, shut up. Don't do that. You should know better than to ask that. [He's had it with her games. All of them.] Because what force in this universe could possibly compel me to tell you anything?
Then where did I come from? Thin air? [ She spreads her hands. Look. He can't deny her existence, can he? ] I am living proof that you're wrong. You know that.
You're nothing but a mistake. [Because if Gallifrey were out there, somehow the Doctor would know it. He just would. Somebody like him, somebody who claims to be even half as intelligent as he is, would have noticed something, he's convinced of that much.] However you got here, whatever it is that got you out, it could never bring back a whole planet.
Nothing in the universe has that kind of power. [If there was, he'd have found it by now.]
No. [ She shakes her head, all sad and wise. ] No, you see, that's the lie you tell yourself. It's what you say to make yourself feel better as you go haring about the universe, travelling everywhere and anywhere but the place you call home.
[ He never came home. Never tried to find her. ]
You tell yourself it's impossible, so you don't have to feel bad for never trying.
[His eyebrows are damning, drawing in over his eyes, creasing the space between them. How dare you they seem to say but the Doctor's voice remains stoic and steady as he looks Missy in the eyes.] That's me. Always finding excuses, always running. Just can't help myself.
[Hands behind his back, knuckles even whiter with tension, he steps backwards and away.] So you should probably stop wasting your time.
[ She'd like to have eyebrows like that. They can practically carry on a conversation by themselves. But she steps forward after him anyway, reaching out to clutch at his shoulder. ]
Watch me. [His feet are already itching. Time to run.] No, better yet, chase me. I dare you. All over the universe if you like but there's one thing I can guarantee you, Missy. I'll always be a step ahead.
