And her point, really, was that Clint should be tracking Fury down and treating him as the complaints department instead. As soon as Phil saw what the process did to people, saw the side effects, he wanted the whole Tahiti project shut down. If it had been up to him, he wouldn't have let it happen to Clint or Natasha, or to anyone else. Fury's the one who made the final call: authorized it the last time.

She shifts her weight, expression inscrutable, and watches him like she hasn't been "antsy" about a goddamn thing a single day in her life.]

[The Battle of New York was a defining time. Everyone knows where they were when it happened, when the world changed. May was sitting behind a desk in D.C., uselessly filing and stapling. She's not arrogant enough to think she could've made the slightest difference if she'd been on the Helicarrier, but if she allowed herself to look back instead of forward, she would wish she'd been there anyway. She didn't think she had anything left to lose, and then Phil died. Proved her wrong.]

Nat has my number. [That's an offer, but she knows how Strike Team Delta feel about backup. They never used to need it, just like they never needed an extraction. The mun's already told her that there's only so much screen time to go around in Ultron, and they've already got Wanda and Pietro to juggle, she's just not listening.]

And Tony doesn't always have his suit. Rogers might be able to jump out of elevators but he's not immortal and Banner...
