I understand that they won't exactly be looking at me as a friend or ally, but at least I'm not an alien whackjob bent on creeping them the hell out.

Besides, you can always introduce them to that AU you never fully explored like you had said you wanted. I bet they'll go for that a lot better than his if you ever got up the nerve to reveal it.
