Only in looks. Most sandshrews I've seen are only half the size of a shirshrew.

Maybe it's a latent talent. Korra couldn't airbend until she lost conscious access to the other elements. Maybe up until that happens you've been able to handle everything life throws at you without bending. And when you finally need it, it's there for you.
