Elijah, tell me at what point do we cease to be a dysfunctional family? Sometimes it feels like this baby can't possibly heal the rift between all of your family, let alone me.
[Talk about a difficult question. Elijah has to look away and take a moment to think about it. But he can't lie to her. He looks back at Hayley, and his voice is soft.]
I don't know. These are old wounds. Rebekah's betrayal happened a century ago, but it isn't the first and it may not be the last. We keep retreading the same ground, over and over again. The difference is, I believe, this baby is something new. You know it's true that despite our differences, we all want to protect you. If we can put the past behind us and focus on what we have here and now... Then I think this child can help bring us together.
You'd have to convince Klaus first. He seems to be the center of strife now and forever.
[She knew these were old wounds coming to light, but Klaus would be hell bent on gaining his share of vengeance]
I have my doubts, Elijah. He's more preoccupied with creating a kingdom in New Orleans and satisfying that ego of his. I can't even remember the last time he stopped to ask me how my day was. Or even asked to go to a doctor's appointment with me. I don't think he'll fully realize what he has until he's holding our daughter in his arms.
[Squint. You look vaguely familiar. A little impertinent for one of Marcel's riffraff, but the French Quarter vampires will find out soon enough anyway.]
[Elijah nods.] He will. I can't predict when. If Klaus were predictable, we might have figured all this out some time ago.
[He knows it might be easier for Klaus to get over it if he punishes Rebekah first - Klaus will only get over things on his terms - but Elijah will not have Rebekah suffer the agony of this new witch blade. The old daggers were bad enough, but at least they only put the Originals to sleep.]
