Oh, none of them ever really know what they're doing. They shoot and hope to make a star fall when all they get is gunpowder.

I'm sorry; gunpowder? [ WHAT IS THIS GUNPOWDER YOU SPEAK OF? ]

Gunpowder? You don't know what --- it's... it's a black powder used in guns. You load it into a gun and set the powder on fire to make a bullet shoot from the open end of the gun.

[ Okay, that answers her first question, but it also brings about one more: ] What is a gun? And a bullet, for that matter? I've never heard of those. [ Where Kahlan's from, those don't exist; there's just knives and swords and agiels. And magic. And... ]

Weapons! Some smaller than others, but they are firearms, designed to kill. The guns... the guns are like... hm... [His fingers twitch and snap as he thinks.] Guns are like crossbows, but instead of bolts, they use small, round metal pellets. Those are called bullets. Perhaps if you think of them as very small canons, you would understand better.

[ Kahlan's brow continues to furrow deeper and deeper as he explains until he mentions the canons. Those they have, though they're not incredibly common. Still, the idea of someone using a small one, and putting one in their hand... ] And these are common where you're from? People use them regularly?

Not quite so common, but people do use them. Soldiers, more like, and mercenaries.

Swords have become obsolete, then? [ She shakes her head a little. ] How unfortunate; they take skill and these... guns sound like they take very little.

[overreaching]

No, we all still use swords. Guns are only for those who can afford them. Even a decent blade is worth more than a whole month's worth of meals for some.

[maythespirits]

I can certainly understand that. [ She smiles faintly. ] Hopefully there's at least little use for swords and guns alike. [ Though she has a feeling that's not the case. ]

[painfully]

Have you... heard anything about that place?

[maythespirits]

Not as much as I'd like, unfortunately. [ Which clearly displeases her. ] Are you there?

[painfully]

Me? No. I think I'm getting pushed into some kind of "test drive" there though, whatever that means.

Sounds an awful lot like being toyed with, to me.

That's exactly what it is. [ Kahlan's been there, done that. ] There's nothing we can do to stop it, either. Believe me, I've tried. Just hope that your mundane is less sadistic than some of the others I've heard about.

[painfully]

[A short, mirthless laugh.] Yeah, well. The sentiment's appreciated, but I think I'm pretty screwed in that department.

You spend so much time, fight so hard against being just a pawn in someone's game, and then you turn around and it's the same thing all over again.

[ Her frown shifts into something more concern-oriented. ] It sounds like you've been through a lot. I'm sorry you seem to have more ahead of you.

[painfully]

[A shrug] Sounds like you're closer to having to deal with it than I am. What about you? You seem like you know a lot about these... "games."

[maythespirits]

[ She nods. ] I was sent to a town called Anatole once. Well, twice, actually. Even since I left that second time, my mundane has been looking for another home for me but could never settle on one. I suppose I ought to be thankful; she could've chosen much worse for me. [ Like certain games that would strip her of her powers and force her to have sex with people just to survive... ]
