Well, it just so happens that I am the leader of the shepherds in a comm called highseas. Actually, you could also say I'm the founder of the shepherds in that world, but that is a rather lengthy tale. Regardless, the point is that this world seems to not have much in the way of major land masses, and the world is absolutely littered with pirates.
There's supposed to be some sort of gem shards that some poltergeist or other wants us to track down, but I don't really have many intentions of seeking it unless I am going to keep it away from those who might use it for nefarious purposes. The point is Gaius, there is also quite a bit in the way of lost treasures, ancient ruins of civilizations, and a decent level of excitement to boot. Now, what do you say? Have I perhaps piqued your interest?
... I may also deign to share with you this fruit tart I was gifted from one of our talented young shepherdesses.
....now that sounds like an interesting story. Actually, picturing you in a setting of pirates is kind of amusing in general. You're getting by somehow?
[Oh, see, now he's thinking. 'belle says lots of pretty words like "gem" and "treasures" ....but that fruit tart there....]
Well as I mentioned before, I am captain of the shepherds in this world. I gathered a brave group of men and women who did not wish to suffer under the heel of the pirate menace. So I have been sailing with them for a few months now. Recently though we've suffered terrible losses, and nearly half of our orignal number are... gone...
[She looks a little pained by that, as though she just can't bear to think on it too long.]
Now really Gaius, have you ever known me to bribe anyone?
Huh, fancy that. A captain. So instead of going after Risen and brigands, you're going after pirates.
[Aw, don't look that way. He'd offer something sweet but he's trying to cut a deal here.]
....well I dunno. Sea travel's a lot different than going on land. I imagine it'd be harder to get sweets too.
And hey, when Blue hired me on, I had a full bag of candy as down payment- so sharing a fruit tart is kind of on the cheap side, don't you think? ...now maybe if you add....say some cookies and a slice of chocolate cake...
Pirates are still brigands, just a different brand of brigands.
[Well it's the thought that counts Gaius.]
Well as you've just said Gaius, it is a little harder to get sweets, so as such I don't have the luxury of offering you as much as Chrom did. At least... I think you were referring to Chrom just now?
Well regardless, I do have some cookies that I'd saved for tea with one of my staff officers... I suppose I could part with those, and let you have the entire fruit tart in lieu of chocolate cake.
[There's a coy almost seductive look on Maribelle's face as she tries to bargain with the sticky fingered thief.]
Did I mention that a member of our shepherds is quite the little baker? It seems a little over the top to be asking for cake and cookies, and my sweet tart, when we both know you'll sweeten your way into her kitchen. Did I mention it's made with real strawberries? Freshly picked, and with just a dash of heavenly sweet cream, and apricot jelly?
[He hates feeling cornered. But hey, a ship with a kitchen is a step up from camps and cookfires, right?]
You drive a hard bargain, Twinkles.
-of course, I'll be the judge of just how heavenly that sweet cream is... [...with strawberries...and apricot jelly. When's the last time he's even had apricot jelly?]
[She wants to hold it in, and look like a prim and proper lady accepting his application but... she just can't hold it in. It's been too long since she's seen him, or most of the shepherds for that matter, and she gives him a great, big, slightly tackling hug.]
Oh Gaius! I'm going to be ever so happy to see your mun's application when applications open once more. Perhaps I'll even splurge on getting you and the whole crew a giant chocolate cake to celebrate the solstice.
Well it wouldn't be much of a gift if I was going to make you pay for it.
[She had just spent Halloween as a risen a few weeks back, and was coughing up blood for days afterwards... to say her life has been rough this past while would be... an understatement.]
[Maribelle practically leaps three feet in the air before dashing off of Gaius in an embarrassed hurricane of flailing arms. She then opens her parasol to hide her blushing face behind it.]
Gaius... please promise me you won't tell a soul about this.
[Gaius is just going to...sit here and watch because wow, he's pretty sure that's the fastest he's ever seen Mari move. Once she's off and hiding behind her parasol, he casually gets to his feet and dusts off.]

[Uh oh... this is the looks of someone who clearly wants to enable.]
I know of a place where a man of your talents would be particularly appreciated for the shepherds.

You're the last person I expected to make any suggestions.
All right Twinkles, what do you have?

Just how much more difficult are we talking about? Although so long as there's sugar and bees and things, I guess there's always a way to make do...
....
[Ugh, cookies sound good. And a fruit tart is better than none- Tch, he should know better than to make deals on an empty stomach.]
...I guess I could accept that, with the promise of cake the moment one's available.
