Some of them are kinda big and have very sharp teeth...

[There may be worse things than being unable to protect your child when they need it, but Alex can't think of one right now.]

It's not so bad, David. My mun knows yours, and she says they'd never hurt you. And there's . . . quite a crowd in here as well.

[He kneels next to his son, not sure whether to reach out for a hug, still not sure of his own strength.]

[David's face is a study in rapid-fire emotions when he sees his father. Excitement; relief; uncertainty. The boy still isn't entirely sure how to react to Alex. He is still his father, still one of the two most important people in the world to him, but he is also...different, and David hasn't fully adjusted to it yet.]

I didn't know that someone could get so many people and giant mons- I mean, animals in one place. It's...really big in here.

[Small talk, always the small talk now. He hesitates and stares at Alex for a long moment when he kneels before finally walking over to him, looking like he would very much like a hug but doesn't know if he should.]

[Love overrides programming, every time. Alex opens his arms without thinking about it and folds them loosely around David.]

Guess that means there's plenty of space for you to run around, huh? Have you found anyone to play football with yet?

[His voice is slightly choked. Seems like those nerves are still working just fine.]

[David automatically curls into the hug, resting his head against Alex's shoulder and wrapping his arms around his neck. The chest he cuddles against is not as warm or as soft as it was before but again, Dad is still Dad at the very core.]

There's a few other kids in here that have offered to play with me but I haven't joined them yet.

[Alex rests his human hand over the back of David's head, marvelling at the warmth and softness that he never believed he'd feel again.]

Well, what are you waiting for, boy? Go make new friends. I know they'll love you.

[He ruffles David's hair carefully and smiles.]

But Dad, there are dragons here! Really big ones! What if they try to eat me like the ones in the bedtime stories?

Hey, hey, it's okay. Listen, remember what happened to the bad dragons in the stories? The knight went and defeated them.

[He taps his silver chest playfully.]

And youy've got your very own knight in shining armor.

Now, they might be bad dragons, but they might be good ones. You've got to gather evidence first before making that call, okay? If they're wicked dragons, then I'll come protect you. But if they're nice, then you can make friends. Wouldn't that be great?
