Being recently picked up is a little like being burned. You find yourself somewhere new after an uncomfortable transition, your head hurts and the fridge is never stocked. The locale isn't what you'd pick, the company inevitably could be a lot better, and no one asked your opinion on the whole thing.

There's a trick to disentangling yourself as expediently and with as little collateral damage as possible. That trick isn't to be the least interesting guy around -- just be less interesting than the next target. Sometimes all you can really do is casually suggest a few movies, maybe a new paperback, and wait for the searchlight to hit something new and shiny while you slip out the back.

And hey, if you're lucky? You can find a few old friends to bide your time with.

...Or unlucky. That one all depends on the friend. But either way, you're stuck: it's time to lock it down, paste on a smile, and never let them see you sweat.
