[Eren's eyes widen only briefly with surprise before being set back in a hard glare, green eyes staring right into Annie's blue. When she shoves him down he spits to the side and continues to glare at her]

...We're at war, Eren. For there to be war, there have to be two sides. People on opposite sides kill each other. It's not about hurting people. It's just how things are, and I can't control what side I fight for any more than you can.

You always have a choice, Annie. Why even choose that side! There's nothing for anyone there! What would you even do? Live outside the walls as a Titan? Then you're just in a flesh prison instead of within a wall. [he stands up and brushes himself off] It's no way to live.

You act like I'd have anything to gain from it. Use your head; what good would it do me? Every action I took was with some goal in mind. Whatever you think of me, I didn't enjoy fighting people I went through years of training with, and I wouldn't have if I didn't have a reason to. That's gone now. It means nothing.

I won't pretend the deaths of some faceless, nameless nobodies affected me. I'd be worthless as a soldier if they did. But I couldn't detach myself completely, much as I tried. That's why I failed in the first place. I let Jean and Armin live when I had them dead to rights. Not to mention, I taught you how to fight, and I'm betting you've put that to good use by now.

I'm surprised you're not giving me shit about killing Titans. It's the same, right? Except it's not. They don't have families, or emotions, or feel love... I'm sorry if that's how you saw them, but I didn't know any of them from Adam. Just that they were the enemy.

As for that... I didn't have a good reason. I guess for a while there, I just thought of you as a friend. [She shrugs, shaking her head slightly.] Don't ask for an explanation for that one, because damned if I know it myself.

I haven't been through what Eren told me about, so I can't really judge past what people tell me. I wanna make my own conclusions, after all. I mean-- I might not've known you super well, but there must be a reason for all this crazy shit, right?
