Few can get enough of me the first time, if history is any indication.

I expected better, however.

I'm not interested in unnecessary complications. Yet unnecessary complications appear very interested in me.

[She might. Feelings have a way of being complicated.]

The heart and its matters are not black and white, Ratonhnhaké:ton. It isn't a blatant 'right' or 'wrong.' When actions are the result of a heart, you cannot berate someone for having one.

[A heart, she means. Why is she even trying.]

I have been well enough. The Brotherhood in my game has begun to grow in number, and I expect that will only continue. It will be good to have more allies.

It pleases me to hear it. I fret less when you have others with you, though you are no longer a child. You are finding yourself with support at your back then, and those you can trust.

Yes. I already had friends and allies in that place, but none of them Assassins. Should a Templar threat ever develop there, I can depend on the Brotherhood to assist. And with no Templars to fight at present, we can strive towards other, better goals.

I have no fondness for the Templars myself, yet your world of the Brotherhood is not one I can fit in either. Yet their assistance provided to me is unforgettable and treasured. Perhaps things would have been different if I could have joined their cause.

[But her dedication to their village was too much most likely - and continues to be.]

Why did you not join? Achilles told me you and he were friends, and that the Assassins and the Haudenosaunee have many links.

[He was surprised to learn he was the first of his people to join the Assassins at all. Were they too intertwined to the colonists to be worthy of full trust, perhaps...? Or perhaps the threat of the Templars had never seemed relevant to his people for them to wish to join.]

I was to be Clan Mother.

[Times before him. She remembers them well. Perhaps if she'd not had that obligation, she might have joined with Achilles.]

The Brotherhood was good to me. Had it not been for their resources, my motivation and initiative would have done very little. Despite that, I could not leave our people to fend for their own. I feel if I had been discovered, our people may have paid the price, regardless of my own abilities.

[A troubled frown passes across his face.]

What of the choice I made, then? Am I putting our people at risk -- or worse, abandoning them?

[She shakes her head.]

No. You are helping in your own way. Do not feel so confined. You had your reasons for leaving and you were understood. You must have been.

Not all understood. Many thought I left because I wanted to. One misunderstood my intentions entirely... and chose to oppose me.

[His voice thickens at that with barely-disguised emotions. He's not proud of how things ended with Kanen'tó:kon, even if he was acting in self-defence. If his friend had just listened...]

I have often questioned if I was right to join the Assassins, but after my spirit journey, I did not feel I had a choice. I needed the skills and training to protect our people from the outside, not to simply sit and wait to be destroyed.

The world is a mass difference of perceptions, my son. Some will understand the things you do and others will view you as one of his own accord. It isn't possible to sate all people. Sometimes unfortunate things are required to happen.

[For the greater good? Simply because that's the way Life is? She has no answer for that. No explanation.]

You did what you believed was right. I cannot fault you for that. Like you, I could not stand at inactivity. It was why and how your father and I met. For he helped me several times as well. But I could not do nothing, though I was, like you, not to get involved.

I feel that with the Assassins, I have done more good and aided more people than I ever could have alone. Not just our own people, but everyone oppressed by the Crown. And yet...

[Sometimes his task feels impossible -- a fight without end. But he can't admit that. It was a burden he was and is prepared to carry.]

I am glad you understand my choices, Mother, even if they differ to yours. Knowing that reassures me.

We are very alike and I see a good deal of myself in you.

[And she sees a lot of Haytham, as well. That stubborn demeanour. His persistence. His drive. Haytham without the ambition to control the world.]

I could not judge you without judging myself also. The world may turn against you, yet I will not.
