The dead should be left at peace, but surely joy is allowed at seeing their eyes be lit with life again. [ Aragorn shifts slightly, bringing his pipe down and looking steadily at Theoden. ]
[ Merry is very happy to see Theoden, but the seeming frustration with the current situation cools him down a bit. He wants his lord happy, after all. ]
If naught else, my lord, perhaps we may have our conversation of pipeweed?
[ Or, well, he tried. He just can't help but want... well, it is a selfish thing, and Merry will be pleased so long as Theoden finds peace with himself. ]
( another small smile tugs at him. at the very least, the faces that greet him are those of friends. )
Who am I to decline such a generous invitation? Though I would gladly speak with you of anything that you so desire. Time is no longer a matter of urgency to me, and I verily enjoy your company.
[She can't deny what Théoden asks of her. Not when she's so happy to be able to see him again. So yes, she smiles softly at him, feeling a bit shy by his compliment.]
But I... my Lord... Are you well? [You had fallen, she wants to say.]
crosses medieval things together like a boss idek hi eri
I was no Lord when you met me, and 'twill take a man with far greater pride than I to ask for the title of King from you, my lord, when you have taught me so much of kingship.
[ He stands, and Aragorn's own smile appears, and his lips curve even further up at the corners. ]
[Well here's a dwarf that was dead before you were born and doesn't even know it yet, My Little Horse Master. He looks up at the Man in front of him with relative indifference.]
If these wordsmiths were only inclined to choose from the living--or those that wished themselves to be taken--these would be very quiet halls.
[....................................Just like Moria.]

god i need SMILING ICONS DAMMIT he looks so cross all the time
You've held many names in the past, a few of which is known to me. 'Thorongil', when I was young, and 'Strider', when young Master Meriadoc delights us with the story of your travels. 'Aragorn' is the name you chose to bear when we have fought together. Indeed, it is a fitting name to call a friend.
( he is and always be a lord, théoden thinks. )
Éomer is king now, however, and I shall want nothing more than for you to call me by my name as well.
I would have left you and Éomer on a happier note, had I been given the choice. But I had gone to my fathers, to my son, and embraced death like an old friend. I am well.
( he sleeps now, beside the graves of the old kings. there is no better honour. )
And you, my niece? Are you well? You had shadows on your face when I saw you last.
( conversations with gimli has led théoden to pay more respect to the dwarf lords. so he treats you, thorin, as he would treat his old friend. )
More's the pity that it is what we want, Master Dwarf, that they do not wish to heed. I hear that they gain great joy in our providing for our anguish.
'Holy Land', by whose words? Perhaps a land proclaimed to be 'Holy' by Men who know little of godliness is no such place to look for peace.
( not that he knows anything about that. there is no 'holy land' in middle-earth, only the lands of elves and men and dwarfs, kingdom scattered across the continent. and mordor, of which he bears no love. )
Great kings, young and old, have their vices and faults, and a Man such as I is no different from the rest. I do not see myself as great, but others treat me as they believe to see me. ( a beat. ) But I am a king, should that satisfy your curiosity -- or, I were, before I went to my death. Théoden is my name.
Although you have undoubtedly earned that peace, my lord, you'll find few muns who will respect such boundaries. Take joy in seeing your loved ones, and in the fact that they may see you once more; that is a gift that not many receive.
It is unfortunate that what we are made to suffer may cause others to suffer, as well.
[Exsilium was one thing. Thinking about his quest coming to a halt after it only just began, and not being able to give the dwarves back their homeland, that was another psychological beast entirely.]
that is pretty much why i bought aragorn's paid account again ahahah
[ Oh, his many names. Aragorn wonders if he should tell that he has two other: Elessar, and Envinyatar, the Elfstone and the Renewer. But that is not the time, however, and he only smiles and inclines his head again. ]
Theoden. [ A pause. ] 'Twas a great honour to have met you, and Gondor will never forget its debts to Rohan. Éomer-king will never lack of aid from us.
LMAO and i said i was gonna play movie-verse but obviously i can't help but write like tolkien
( éomer. there is a pang there, a need to know, for éomer is his nephew, a boy he raised as his own and treated as he would his son. éowyn is here, and she is as lovely as she has always been in his eyes. )
Éomer-king is a great Man, whom I love with all my heart. Rohan is safe with him, just as the realm of Gondor is with you. You are both great Men, Aragorn. I pride myself in being allowed to walk beside you.
it's tolkien prose in movieverse. shut up and go with it. i do it all the time
[ Aragorn does not understand how it feels to lose a child. He is of greater age than Theoden, but he has never had a child - sixty-seven years are long to wait for the Lady Arwen, but Aragorn has never regretted waiting. He only regrets that he will soon be torn from her side again.
Yet. He takes a long breath, debating whether to speak. There is, he hopes, no harm in it. ]
'Twill please me greatly if you will walk alongside me on a ship, Theoden. [ He swallows the 'King', but lowers his eyes nonetheless. ] 'Tis a ship that sails alongside stars, and I doubt I am the only one who will appreciate your presence.
