There's no reason that such a brief appearance should encourage you to take me from my world and place me in another. Focus on the man from Italy, if you're enjoying his tale so much. My work is not a game, and I refuse to play in one of yours.

Altaïr. [ she says it carefully, as though testing the name out on her tongue. tasting it. and after a moment of thoughtful silence, she holds out her hand. ]

I'm Buffy. Buffy Summers.

[He looks at her for a moment before taking the offered hand (with the one of his that has all five fingers).]

You've encountered the mundanes often, then?

[ the shake is firm but friendly. not a single dash of reticence, really. ]

I've been stuck with mine for years, if that counts.

[pushesgently]

This one is new, but persistent. And not as distracted by my brothers from the future as I had expected.

[herotypical]

Excuse me? [ a flicker of confusion dovetailed by curiousity. ] Brothers from the future?

[pushesgently]

The brotherhood spans centuries. Yet this mundane remains fixated upon my era.

[herotypical]

Maybe you should be flattered.

[ ... ] What about the sisters?

[ hey. she can't help it. coming from a century-spanning sisterhood herself, she's piqued. ]

Few women have dwelled at Masyaf that I've seen, but they are just as capable.

[Coincidentally, it becomes less of a boy's club after he gets hitched.]

[ she leans back on her heels, arms crossed over her chest. ] Not that I have any idea where or what Masyaf is. Or your whole brotherhood thing in general. Brotherhood of what? Guys who think it's okay to wear white after labour day?

[That gets a slightly confused stare because labour what now?]

[ eyebrows up. ] Yeesh, Altaïr. Remind me not to get on your grumpy side. I do so hate being tagged by assassins. It's such a pain in the ass.

Don't ally yourself with the Templars and you'll have nothing to fear.

I'm not so sure I'd have anything to fear either way, I'm afraid. Assassination attempts are, as I said, a pain. Not really the stuff of nightmares, though.

[ she has the rest of her life to supply the nightmares. ]

Perhaps the Assassins you've known were not as skilled.

[There's that pride, again.]

Perhaps. [ the order of taraka had ultimately been easier than one might have first anticipated, certainly. but they were only three assassins. this guy was suggesting something a little more involved, wasn't he? ]

Or maybe much like paper covering rock in the classic playground game, Slayers have a habit of winning out over Assassins.

[pushesgently]

[A Slayer, eh. He gives her a longer, considering look. Perhaps there's more to this girl than he anticipated.]

I haven't heard that term before.

[herotypical]

Slayer -- comma -- the. Look it up. You'll find my picture next to a short description that probably reads something like 'she who hands out in cemeteries' or 'not long for this world' or 'chosen one'.

That's a lot of words to tell me very little.

[ her eyes drop but her smirk persists. ]

I slay the bad guys, Altaïr. It's as simple as that.

[ hardly. hardly simple. ]
