Mun, as cute as you think these homecoming videos are on youtube, maybe I should just go out for a run or something whenever you want to look at those.

[It's kind of clear Steph's just not willing to watch the homecoming videos.]

...Maybe I'll just go get some pie, then.

We did what we did because it needed to be done. Because lives needed saving, because that is how we are. Not for the appreciation. Not for anyone noticing it, after. Not coming back was an possibility. Just... try to see them as people who got to have that because of us. Some of them did, you know? Your work and mine, made real.

[She hugs him tightly]

I know, Bucky, I know. If it weren't for us, hundreds of men wouldn't even have had their homecoming. Or even live to have the great kids or grandkids that I see these days.

It just...kind of kills me a little, you know? You never got that. Not really.

[Hugs her back, a tiny bit more burrowing than support, though.]

Besides, others didn't come back home because of me.

I know it's not their fault. I...I know. And I'm glad they got to go home. And I don't need the recognition.

[She holds him tightly because she did what she did because she wanted him to come home. Then one thing lead to another and a super soldier serum later...]

[Bucky lets his breath out in what's almost a soft sigh.]

[her voice is barely audible because of the chaos when he first arrived. Steph doesn't seem to want to ever let him go]

Welcome home, Bucky.

[There's half a smile on his lips.]

All the welcome I ever might've wanted, anyway.

[she smiles at him a little]

Yeah? I always thought you were gonna be swept off your feet by some fancy French girl.

Never.

[Fierce whisper.]

[She kisses him and just holds him tightly. This should've been us. Should've been in 1945. Not now.]

[And he kisses back, soft, and sad, but very, very much present, and wanting her to hurt that little bit less. Better late than never.]

[She keeps kissing him and when they finally surface for air, she leans her forehead against his]

Those videos make my mun cry. Every time. Yours is a masochist, Steph.

On a lighter note, if there's a girl version of you, then is there a Tony-with-an-i running around here? Because sexist as it is, I'd feel weirdly uncomfortable about my arc reactor being installed by a guy if I was a woman at the time. [Maybe if he babbles on enough he'll distract Stephanie from her impending sadness. It's worth a shot - Tony can out talk and out pace most of the team on a good day. And he really doesn't like seeing her sad.] Not that Yinsen was unattractive, but. You know. Guy was married.

[she just gives a nod]

So basically he and I are on the same page about people eye-fucking you. [If he can't pull her out of this with banter, he'll do it with crassness. You're not allowed to drown in your sorrow, Steph, but the people good at comforting others aren't here, so he'll have to do.] Quick question - did my dad feel you up post-serum?

[That gets her usual disapproving look about using crass words around ladies]

No. He may have been a cad but he never laid a finger on me. His machines came first. Then the Commandos made sure he wasn't getting any smart ideas. That's like asking if Coulson made a pass when you all found me again.

You haven't seen the fanart of you and Coulson, have you? Or the security footage where he said you were like Sleeping Beauty. I'm never letting him live that down.

Exactly that. And yes, he did. I have the footage saved onto my computer. I love being able to make cameras undetectable to the human eye. Not just because of security, because it makes life hilarious.
