You are lucky that the people you thread with are patient enough to endure such behavior, but that doesn't change the fact that what you are doing is anything but efficient. Much rather you should ensure to take care of your duties as soon as possible. Granted, of course, you are not being busy with actual work, which always has priority.

It seems to be an awfully common issue, indeed. But there are also plenty of mundane that manage with more efficiency and consistency, so there must be ways to motivate them.

Nothing definite just yet. First I will see if he starts to take care of his duties on his own when he has the time to do so. Clearly he may be in need for a more regulated schedule.

There still is the slight difference between his actual work and the duties he that fall under free time occupation. While it is generally important to not slack off with anything you start, work and other things he has to take care of away from his pc are still more important than the things he does for fun.

I don't think it's naive. Humans are meant to communicate in many ways. And while talking is just one of them, it can be a very effective way to reach a person and make them think and consider matters and options further.You just need to get them to listen and make it clear enough what you want them to understand.
