[It's almost not a question, so hopeless is the tone. Not that this has stopped him from being determined to find a way, but even as he does he's despairing of it. Not that he's ever going to stop trying, but even now the enormity and the apparent hopelessness of the task (it has, after all, already happened) is overwhelming him.
