Must I sing again? My songs may move the beasts and rocks, but they cannot move implacable death. What use are songs that cannot bring back my lost love? What good is music that will only cause grief? Better you let me rest, torn to pieces and forever silenced.

And I do not wish to celebrate the New Year. It but indicates that another year has passed without Eurydice.

I can do nothing but dwell, for nothing else has meaning to me. My friends have all gone to their own tragedies and the world idolizes my name and not my person.
