Possible spoilers in comments for Rise of the Guardians

[Sandy's giving his mun a look. Some of you might know the one. Sure, it would be a lot more intimidating if it were coming from someone who didn't look like a floating cream puff, but what can you do?

He was willing to cooperate to a point, have some fun, but his mun is looking in some unpleasant directions at the moment. Sandy is displeased.

And so the look is all his mun is getting.]

[Henry doesn't know what's wrong but he can certainly tell that something is up. ]

Are you okay?

Having some trouble with your mun, Sandy?

[A child! Sandy quickly drops his frown and nods, smiling for the boy. He adds a quick flex of his arms for good measure. He's a big, tough guardian, after all, and there's no need to worry the children.]

[Oh, Toothiana, you have no idea.

Sandy heaves a silent sigh, beginning his usual game of sand and charades. Images flash above his head fairly quickly, most of them incomprehensible swirls of sand, but a few stand out. One might be a shooting star. Another seems to be an octagonal shape with a bracket on each side. The final picture is the Earth, small as if it's far away, and surrounded by flecks of sand that act as stars.

His mun wants to send him to space. He's always thought about what it might be like to travel the cosmos again, but this isn't how he wants to do it. He has a promise to keep.]

[Henry's not really sure if he should buy this act. He just gives Sandy a kind of a concerned look.]

Are you sure? Maybe I could help.

[Sandy brings a finger to his lips, looking thoughtful as he considers the offer...

Eureka! His golden sand swirls above his head, quickly forming into what should be recognizable as a shooting star. Beneath the star, Sandy brings his hands together palm to palm, as if praying.]

Hm. [She nods, hoping she understood him correctly.] I don't like the idea of going anywhere, either.

[Close enough! He nods in return, pointing to Tooth and flashing a question mark.

Mun sending you somewhere?]

[She points to herself.]

Me? Not just yet. I think she wants to be sure my voice will stay loud, first.

[He jerks a thumb back over his shoulder, taps his own throat, and then mimes laughter.

Sandy's mun likes to joke about his "voice" and how it can't get any quieter.]

[Praying and a shooting star?]

Are you trying to make a wish on something?

[Sandy nods, pointing at Henry and repeating his wishing mime.

Wishes are powerful things, especially coming from children who really believe.]

[She looks a little confused now.]

Ah...something about your voice?

[Okay so he's right. But what was he hoping for?]

Is your mun going to do something, um...Sandman?

[Because that's his best guess at who this guy is. It's almost too obvious.]

[Sandy purses his lips a bit, trying to figure out how to get his point across. Let's give this one more try.

He points to tooth and mimes a talking mouth with one hand, then points to himself and places both hands over his own mouth.]

Oh! Because you don't speak like the rest of us?

[He nods again, smiling wide and warm. You'd be surprised how long it takes some people to figure out who he is.

His sand swirls again, and the guardian is suddenly carrying a suitcase in one hand and tipping a bowler hat in the other. Someone might be going on a trip.]

[You got it! Sandy smiles and nods again.]

I suppose that would be a different kind of challenge for the muns, but I'm sure yours can handle it.

What's wrong?

[Okay, that one is a little easy to pick up on.]

Your mun plans on sending you to a game, but you don't want to get sent to one that's bad. Is that right?

[He shrugs his shoulders in an "I don't know" sort of gesture and then lifts one hand, his first two fingers crossed.

All he can do is hope for the best.]

[The accessories disappear and the guardian claps. Another correct answer!]

Good luck, Sandy! I think we all need a little bit of that around here.

[O-Oh, dear.

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it), Sandy doesn't know the things his mun knows. This little girl, though... she does look very familiar...

Sandy smiles at her, his sand swirling about to form a suitcase in one hand and a bowler hat on his head. He might be going on a trip, and he's not too happy about it.]

[Sandy nods his gratitude and gives Tooth a thumbs-up.]

[seeing the moving sand making pictures makes Jennie giggle. It's so neat!]

Is your mun sending you somewhere?

[Jennie's happiness is distracting enough that Sandy's previous displeasure is no longer showing. He nods and (mostly for Jennie's amusement) forms what might be planet Earth above his hand, small glowing grains of sand shimmering here and there to act as stars.

He might be going a long way.]

What's that? [she peers at the new picture curiously. she recognizes the stars.] Is that...the sky?

[Jennie gets another nod and Sandy spreads his arms, the "sky" above him spreading as new "stars" blink into existence.

It's a big place, little lady.]

[Did someone mention cream puff dream dudes?

I think they did.

And Kirby thinks that look is not cheery enough for a new friend (which is everyone he meets).]

HiIIiiIIIii!

[And so he waves cheerfully.]

[Yes, yes it is. Very big.]

Wow. So...your mun is sending you to the sky?

[She smiles and returns the thumbs-up.]

I think we can do it.

[ Not that this is at all odd or anything, but have another Sandy with a curious look on his face. His own mun is still too nervous to look for a place just yet so he hasn't heard about any of them at the moment. ]

[Nodnod. Among the stars a box forms, vertical bars lining every side like some sort of cage.]

[... Whoa.

Sandy is hundreds, if not thousands of years old. He's seen many, many things. Nightmare creatures and fairies and giant talking rabbits... but this is something new.

The guardian blinks a few times before smiling, returning the wave as he peers curiously at the newcomer.]

[Okay, momentarily distracted by the sight of himself. Sandy's seen quite a few copies of some of the other guardians, but he hasn't come face to face with any of his own yet.

... Neat. 8D

He smiles and waves at his other self.]

And she's locking you up?

That's not very nice.

[ Very neat indeed! 8D

Sandy, after mirroring his other self in both smile and wave in greeting, motioned to the top of his head where an airplane of sand started flying around before shifting into a question mark.

He was curious to know where this other Sandy was going to. ]

[Right? It's a pretty jerky thing to do.

A small Sandy-shaped figure appears in the box for a moment before bursting though the bars and streaking back toward the little sand Earth.]

[Double Sandy charades! This should be interesting.

Golden sand shifts to form a small planet earth above his head, small clusters of grains coming together to form glittering stars all around it.

Someone might be going to space.]

[Jennie smiles again, seeing the little picture-Sandy escaping from his prison.]

You'll escape. That's good.

[Kirby has remained mostly oblivious to the fact that a 20cm tall pink ball with a friendly outlook on life is unusual. But, with Sandy giving him such a curious look, there is only one option.

Breakdancing. A short, jaunty tune plays from nowhere at all as the puff rolls onto his side and spins once, before rising up on one of his little arms to complete a second.

There. Now Sandy got a good look.]

[he lifts a hand and crosses his first and second fingers. Here's hoping!]

[Sandy claps excitedly, floating a few inches off the ground and bobbing up and down. Now that is definitely something he's never seen before!

Once he's had ample chance to marvel over that little display he points at Kirby, golden sand swirling above his head to form a question mark.

Who're you, dude?]

[Kirby's response is a modest blowing of kisses to crowd that is not there.

The pink fellow marvels at the sand for a second, then returns the clapping. Sadly, Kirby is not always the best at communicating and now thinks they are sharing tricks. That means Sandy gets to enjoy the sight of the little guy sucking in air and floating about like a balloon in a quick circle.]

[Oh, dear, this is going to get confusing. In fact, Sandy already looks confused. He's still very amused, of course, but the balloon act doesn't really answer his question.

Let's see how clear we can make this...

He waves until he's got Kirby's attention again, this time using his sand to form a little name tag shape on his own chest. Repeating the pointing and question mark after, hoping his new pink friend will get that it's his name Sandy's after.]
