[Here, there's a demon girl that's dragging over a chair that's as big as she is and sets it in front of Nightwing. She then hops up on the chair and sits in it.]
You don't look fine. Why don't you talk about it? I'm all ears.
*... and here's a circus performer by birth, in mixed company. Who's been raised, after the circus, by a millionaire concealing what he actually does. The smile is quick and bright and easy.*
Oh, I assure you, there's nothing to talk about, but thanks! Appreciated.
*because there are things that aren't going outside his team. And some that aren't going outside even to them.*
[There's a brief moment of disappointment, but she's big enough to let things go.]
Well, now I feel kind of dumb for bringing out the chair all this way. But if you're sure there's nothing I can help you with there's no sense in me waiting for you to come up with a problem. [She looks down to get off her chair before looking back up.]
That's not what I meant. It's not a math calculation or anything like that! It's just... Do you have any idea how to get this thing better without putting anyone in danger?
If anyone would take me, I'd have been the one there, Wally, rather than ask this kind of thing of anyone else. But I'm... here.
[Have a slightly older Dick looking through narrowed eyes at Wally.]
To be perfectly honest, Wally? Yes. It's part of what we signed up for. Nobody forced Artemis into that situation. It was her choice to make. Besides, what good would it be if we survived and nobody else did?
Yeah, but... I'm not sure what'll be left, if this is one of them. Other than the future Bart came from.
*jawclench.* I don't want to think Kaldur has, either. But there's only so much anyone can take. Most of his old friends hate him, and that's his father there. And the longer he stays there, the less he has to come back to. I should have... there should have been another way.
*swallows. Because it's Wally, and he's saying that, about Artemis, and it's... Dick just kicks back into leadership mode, face blanking out a bit, shoulders straightening.*
Then make it a little easier on them by keeping faith? Who knows, maybe it'll be something as small as that which makes the difference.
And so long as they do come back, there will be a hero's welcome waiting for them. The League will see to that. With the information you had at hand, you made the best call that you could. There's no use dwelling on what could've happened.
What's done is done, and all you can do now is move forward. It's hard, but it's the only thing that will keep you sane. Just don't forget, you're not alone in this.
And of course there will be... so long as there's any League left to do so. And that... Kaldur's been with Black Manta for a while now. He's done things that - he never would have, otherwise.
No matter what the welcome, no matter how much it - pays off, he'll have to live with what he's done, afterwards. And with friends who've lived with the knowledge that he's betrayed them. I think most of them will forgive him. I don't know that, and neither does he.
You're right, all I can do is move forward. I'm just... not sure where that will lead.
Kaldur is not his father. He spent most of his life in Atlantis, under Aquaman's guidance. Remember, we're not a product of our genes, but our experiences. Otherwise, Conner would be just as coniving as Luthor.
He's made some tough choices, and yeah, he'll have to live with that, but he hasn't crossed the line. The Cave was just a place. It can be rebuilt. And in doing so, it'll have a stronger connection to all of you.
As for the League, there will always be a League. If it could survive a dimensional collapse, it can survive an interplanetary incident. The members may change, but there will always be someone who will stand up for those that can't.
And the future? Of course it's uncertain. But it's up to you to help shape that future. You just have to do your best, and the world will recognize that.
