This sure isn't Deadwood.

It can't always be a bad thing, finding yourself at a crossroads. Life's full of 'em. Just take your time and figure out what it is that you want... things'll fall into place after that. It's the same thing Chaynah always told me, and the advice hasn't been wrong yet.

But if you're really thinking of sendin' me somewhere, I'd mighty appreciate if you could make sure Dakota comes with me and that old Joe isn't too far behind. I wouldn't want him to be getting into trouble at some saloon and truth be told, it gets too quiet without his nagging.

They understand things a lot more than people give them credit for. Fact is, most of the "civilized" world could stand to learn a lot from them.

[The "civilized" world, huh? Phillip laughs inwardly at that. What could this woman know about the civilized world? She couldn't possibly understand it the way Brandon did, the way Brandon had helped Phillip to understand it.

Of course, he doesn't say anything to share his thoughts, only replies meekly.]

[ A faint light of amusement in her eye when she replies. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr Phillip Morgan. My name's Jane... Calamity Jane, they call me. Would I be right in reckoning you're from back east?

["Calamity Jane"? Phillip's no great scholar, but he's fairly certain he's heard that in regards to history and this young lady isn't old enough to go with the name. Perhaps some sort of nickname among friends?]

Likewise, Miss Jane.

[Her way of speaking irks Phillip. She reminds him a bit of Janet in mannerism, but her command of the English language is a bit too rough for his liking.]

Yes, you would be right. I'm from New York. Where are you from?

I'm right pleased to call Deadwood, South Dakota as my home now. Before that, the Comanche lands of Colorodo.

[ She makes a slight face. ]

I don't think I've ever been to South Dakota. Is it nice?

I would think it's peaceful all the time.

Spoke like someone who hasn't ever seen the West except in postcards. It's not all blowing prairie fields out here, Mr Morgan. There are a lot of good, honest folk out here... but there's also people who don't abide any laws and don't want those who do to have any peace.

["Folks who don't abide by the laws", eh? Phillip looks away from Jane, feeling very uncomfortable with eye contact.]

Is that right?

[ She notes that reaction, but careful to keep any sort of suspicion out of her tone. ]

People are people no matter where they live or where they're from, but they don't all get treated the way they should. Not sure it'd be the same as in fancy New York City, but crime is crime.

[This is not a conversation Phillip particularly wants to have. He attempts to change the subject.]

Can't say I ever have. It always struck me as an all right place to visit so long as you weren't planning to stay for too long.

Not sure Dakota would appreciate a train ride that long though.

It's not so bad. I've lived in Manhattan for awhile now. It's got a charm of its own.

You could always come by plane.

[She seems unhappy now and Brandon's not here to diffuse the situation. Phillip manages to cut off his amusement at the innocuous comment.]

[ The apology is perhaps a bit of a surprise, and Jane doesn't pursue it any farther. ]

Bet you'd like the West, if you ever saw it. Just don't let Wild Bill rope you into a poker game and you'd be right as rain.

[Phillip frowns and states very firmly.]

That's a right truth. Not to bad at it, if I do say so myself -- but I play a good, honest game.

[ Jane relents and hopes to steer the conversation to something he seems less reserved about. ]

She hasn't. It seems she's only been using me on places like this.

Truth be telling, it's the same with me. Can't be saying that she doesn't like me but every time she thinks of putting me somewhere, she gets colder than a trout in spring thaw.

As I understand it, our muns like us a bit too much and have set the standards for any potential games we might go to a bit...high.

[ Jane seems surprised. ]
