I can't do that on some intergalactic prison ship.

[Even in a different costume, even from a different world, Cass can still see:]

Barbara?

[Barbara tenses, mouth curling into a hard scowl beneath her cowl.]

Who are you?

[She's already shifted into a defensive stance. No one should know who she is, no one except Bruce.]

[There's no responding hostility. It's not like she needs to, really.]

Your... [Daughter? It's on the tip of her tongue, and maybe she could have been, but not now, not with this Barbara.] Friend. Ally.

I don't have friends. [The words are instant and hard. Batgirl works alone, she always has. It's better that way.]

[That statement hurts, and it shows on her face, her brows drawing together in a frown. There's a long silence before she speaks again]

You should. You need them. To - soften you.

[She's seen how Oracle walks on that edge, it's not hard to see that this Barbara is teetering on the same one.]

[That expression takes her aback, slightly; it seems so sincere.]

Gotham doesn't need someone soft.

[She peers at Cass, trying to place her, but she just can't. Can't be from Gotham, then -

No. Can't be fromher Gotham.]

Gotham needs - many things. [which is neither a yes or a no, but something in between, because it's the truth]

[And there's a nod in response to that statement, a look to the side before she's watching arbara again] She is family. [yes, 'family' is a good word, she likes that one]

Family. [She says it sceptically, but there's the slightest edge of yearning in her voice.]

Yes. [She takes a half step closer, her fingers gently resting over her heart and a thoughtful look on her face] A real one. You gave it to me.

[Her eyes widen, beneath the cowl, and when she speaks her voice is softer.] Never thought I'd hear that. I don't... [She doesn't have much to give. Not that way.]

[slowly, carefully, Cass moves her hand to touch Babs - the same spot, over her heart] Maybe that is - what that place can give. Help you -- [a pause as she struggles with the words] open up.

[Her first instinct is to slap the touch away, but there's something about this girl that stills her hand.

All the same, she shakes her head.]

I can't afford to. [There isn't room in her life for that. There can't be.]

[Cass sees that restraint and while she doesn't smile, her expression is relieved as she steps back]

Caring makes us stronger. [there's so much conviction in her voice as she says it]

Excuse me! I can fend for myself just fine!

My mun has been telling me that Supergirl should be coming to the Barge, if that helps.

[A little frown after a few seconds] ...That heartbeat is familiar though.

My city, yes. Whose else would it be?

[From confusion to scowling in .5 seconds.] Don't even start with that.

[snort] As a warden, probably.

There was some debate but I think she is going to be an Inmate like me.

[It's hard to look flabbergasted, in this cowl, but Barbara manages it.]

...Different universe. Must be.

[And she looks him up and down.] Which would explain why I don't know who you are.

Bruce's. Or, you know, our city. What happened?

[She hovers right in front of Barbara's face, blue eyes bright while she uses her x-ray vision. There is really no doubt, but... well. There's also reason to doubt this is her Barbara.

For once she's walking.]
