Look. Mun.

It's not that I don't appreciate you getting me out of Carrington's hands for a little while. I mean, I still don't trust the man. And I sure as hell don't like him.

But what the hell are you doing here? Are you honestly thinking about making me look after criminals? The guys whose heads Da taught me to beat into the pavement? I just don't have the patience to try and make them "see the light" or whatever. And what's this other idea you had? Some sort of crazy secret prison masquerading as a mental institution where if you're particularly unlucky they do experiments on you? Exactly what makes you think I'd ever be okay with that?! Those guys sound as bad as some of the hypercorps. ~~Sounds kind of like what they did to Able.~~

You need to find some better options, mun, or I'm going back to Carrington. ~~Can't believe I just said that.~~ At least he has a firing range.

Both options sound like they suck, but if one of them's a space prison like I think it is, you're gonna wanna stay far away from it.

Yeah, it's on some kind of boat. But seriously? I grew up a bounty-hunter's daughter. There's no way I know how to deal with any "inmates" that isn't slapping cuffs on them and hauling them off for the paycheck.

[That sounds like a challenge!] What, you think I can't handle it?

You sound like you'll fit right in. Try cuffing some of the guys there sometime and let me know how it works out for you.

[Oh, but now he's amused] That's exactly what I think. That a problem?

As I understand it, that's not in the job description. Talking to people about their problems isn't how I roll.

[She laughs. You just ignited her stubborn streak.] Only if you were the unlucky guy I'd be assigned to. As it stands? That's exactly what I want to hear.

[He's not going to be baited. Not yet, at least.] Heh. You wish you could take me. And when I was there, I was probably one of the more laid-back inmates, really.

I'd rather get things done and not fit in than be part of the gang and be ineffectual. If I'm going to be there, I have to have a reason. That's why I don't want to go. It's stupid.

[She laughs again, because it's the best way to defuse her own terribly stubborn streak and her constant urge to prove her worth. This guy's funny. Still, she's not liable to underestimate him. Even if he looks like he should still be in high school, she knows that looks can be deceiving. God knows she's used that to her own advantage enough times. And this guy has the predatory glint she's seen before in the most dangerous people she's taken on. Not quite Hayes - Hayes had been an entirely different breed of psychopath - but it's enough to make her consider him more than just a mouthy teenager.]

Laid-back? What'd they drag you in for, petty theft?

[From what she knows of the spaceboat prison, they didn't deal in misdemeanors. So is he going to lie, be matter-of-fact, or brag?]

There are plenty of other reasons why going there is stupid besides that, but I'll let you find those out for yourself. It's more fun that way.

[She reminds him of Bourne somewhat, that sentiment being one he can easily imagine the ex-assassin voicing. But she doesn't have Bourne's imposing presence, and she doesn't have the absolute control over him he enjoyed either . That's why he can ~~troll~~ taunt her and feel relatively sacrosanct, confident in the knowledge that she'd have to move faster than the speed of his thoughts to beat him. Maybe she's got some skills, with the easy way she carries herself that he's come to be familiar with, but he has his power and that puts him on a different level. He offers a bland smile in response to her question.]

[Apparently he decided to pick a fourth option.]

[Ah, a non-answer, her very favorite kind of answer. Were her temper riding particularly high today, and were he standing between her and her goal, she'd bounce his head off the nearest hard surface until he talked. Thankfully for everyone, she's feeling relatively sanguine today and David, cocky as he might be, is not exactly standing in her way. He's just...acting like a bratty sixteen-year-old. And she'd had enough of those in her intermittent attendance of real school. In fact, her method of dealing with cocky, bullying behavior had gotten her expelled from such institutions in the past.]

I've no doubt about that. But babysitting criminals is not really my idea of a good time. So I think I'll pass. [As if you have a choice, Jo. As if you have a choice.]

Well, your brain seems to work a little bit. [And she's smarter than Bourne, too, if she's passing on the Barge. But then, she barely looks much older than him. Maybe he overestimated her.] If all the inmates trying to kill you didn't drive you out of your gourd, the floods and ports would do it.

It's not just criminals there, though. Serial killers, creepy old men, undead zombie kings, there's a little something for everyone.

[She grins.] I'm used to people trying to kill me. And ports don't sound too bad, I like going to new places. But I'm guessing "floods" are more than just water, right?

[The next part of what he says makes her blink. Once.] Serial killers, I can deal with. Creepy old men, I can deal with. [Yeah, she'd dealt with Zhang Li well enough, and while Carrington wasn't creepy per se, he had his moments. The less said about the thankfully-retired kilt, the better. But that last one gives her pause.] Zombie kings? Now you're pulling my leg.

You could say that. [He smirks, amused with himself, and then decides to relent. A little.] Let's just say they call it a barge, but it's really more of ant farm. And whether you're a black ant or a red ant doesn't really matter much in the long run, does it?

[And if anything, her polite incredulity only further encourages him. It has the bonus of loosening his tongue, because while he's learned a measure of discretion... he's still David.] You'd think so, huh? You can always jump in if you don't believe me. And he's not even the weirdest story. Wait until you see the killer fembot or the whiny vampire king.

[She didn't like the idea of being treated like an ant. It was definitely hypercorp thinking, and she resolved not to get caught up in the tender mercies of whoever ran this boat. It reminded her far too much of Rose for comfort.] Black ants and red ants are predisposed to fight. It's not like if they were left to their own devices they'd live in ant harmony.

[Aside:] Killer fembot...now that sounds like something Grimshaw would think up.

[He laughs lightly.] That's true. I'd just as soon not be an ant at all, if it's all the same to you. I only got off that ship because of a lucky break and I'm not gonna take any chances I might get pulled back. [A bit of his paranoia leaks through at that, but he dials it back quickly with a grin and an easy shrug.] The food was lousy.

Oh, you wouldn't believe it. Real kings and fake kings and wannabe kings, you can't turn a corner without getting poked in the eye by someone's crown.

[He's exaggerating, but not by much.]

So far as I understand it, though, getting thrown there isn't really within your control. But yeah - my guess is you'd want to lay low. [Then she grins ruefully.] Institutional food usually is.

Ugh. I bet they're always demanding unearned respect, too, [she says, rolling her eyes. Jo's always had problems with authority figures who weren't her dad. And he hadn't held much truck with them either.]

[He lowers his voice now, conspiratorial.] I got off. I'm not really sure how, but I did. [Then his eyes darken with suspicion as it occurs to him for the first time - if this girl wants to get to the Barge and become a warden, hauling back an fugitive inmate would probably be a good way to do it.] Who are you, anyway? You're a little young to be a warden.

[Never mind that there's wardens there who were much younger. That's a detail he's going to whitewash as long as he can get away with it.

[She shrugs.] Good for you. [Luckily for him, she's not spoiling for a fight right now, nor is she particularly chuffed about going to the Barge. She's pretty sure the Admiral doesn't offer bounties. Still, she catches the note of suspicion in his eyes. That puts her on her guard too. Better to be prepared for a fight that never happens than get caught with your trousers down for one that does.]

You're a little young to be an inmate, [she says, deliberately not answering his question. The nerve. She's twenty, for cryin' out loud.]

Tell that to the Admiral. [She wants to keep secrets? Well, two can play that game. Surreptitiously, he's sizing her up now, just in case this does take a turn for the unpleasant. No weapons that he can see, but that doesn't say much. She could have them concealed somewhere. Or she could just not need them.]

[Luckily for him? She's not Jason Bourne. She's skilled at hand-to-hand but she's far more deadly with a gun than without. Unluckily for him? If this does go south, she's got a Maas P9P tucked into the small of her back. Sure, it's just a pistol, but if you've got dead-eye aim like she does, it's not too difficult to drop a target if you hit him where it counts. She's wearing street clothes with a light jacket, not Carrington's uniform - stylish as the uniform is, there's really no place to conceal anything in it. That's the trouble with future fashion, all spandex and PVC and no goddamn pockets.]

Rather not, if it's all the same to you, [she says breezily.]
