A daemon? The way I understand, it's your soul! Represented as an animal, and living with you instead of within you. I don't know, things get a little fuzzy when I think on the specifics, but it's pretty cool!

That sounds quite interesting. Almost like a pet.

If a part of you can be a pet! Just imagine that. What if your daemon were a goldfish? It'd be like having a pet fish, sort of, and you have to take it everywhere in its bowl!

That would be hard work.

Dangerous too, I bet, but that fish would get to see a lot of the world!

[ Collette nods, looking a bit... pleased and amused. Seeing as she's sitting, dressed in a fairly sporty jumpsuit and not so obviously out of sorts, it might not make sense why. ]

His name's Flash. He's a kind of falcon. Think I should take up sky-diving or something to keep up with him?

I suppose so.

Maybe I could get an owl. I'm due to get one anyway so that would be interesting. Right?

Right! I mean, do you feel like a pretty wise guy who can't sleep at night? Owls are pretty cool. You don't even hear them when they're flying, they're able to see at night, and turn their heads almost entirely around.

[mini_potioneer]

We use them communication as well as pets. Dad said he'd get me one when I turned eleven so I could use it at school. Not that I need it to contact him but it's the thought that counts, right?

[whatsupcroc]

The thought's important, for sure! I've never heard of anyone communicating by owl though.

[ Well, when not also being the owl communicating. ]

Where will you be going to school where you can communicate by owl?

The school is in Scotland. Usually people attach letters to the owls to send to their family but Dad's all I got and he works there.

[Shrugs] Either way it's cool.

It's nice when you get to be right around your family. Pretty cool that you'll get to see him when you want to, if [ and she pulls a face ] maybe not so cool that it's at school. What does he do there?

He's one of the teachers and he's head of some of students too. And school is cool. At least, for me. I've lived there all my life.

All your life? That takes home schooling to a whole other level!

Well since I was a year old, it was just my dad and me. My mum died so she couldn't look after me at home and there was no one else who could. So I moved into school with dad.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I know what it's like growing up with one parent around. I'm glad he was able to take you with him to school!

The Headmaster is really kind. He got an extra room built into my dad's so I had my own place when I was growing up and I was always allowed to explore the castle as long as I attended my lessons and didn't leave. I know this place better than anyone else!

So if anyone wants a tour, you're the guy to ask for it?

Pretty much. I help a lot of the first years out when they arrive because it's really easy to get lost. Once Dad realised this, he let me off classes for the first few weeks. He's the best.

He sounds like a pretty good dad. Does he ever take you on vacations, during break, or the summers?

[mini_potioneer]

Not really. We go into the village by the castle some weekends but we're usually just in the castle or in the house.

Only that far? I'd go crazy if I never got out to see things! There's just so much to do out in the world, so many things to try! You don't ever want to get out and try something new? Different? Maybe a little exciting?

[mini_potioneer]

I do do exciting things. All the time. I never said my life was boring. There's always something fun to do at school or at home. I don't think I want to go anywhere else. Not yet anyway.

[whatsupcroc]

At school? Your school has to be a lot more interesting than mine ever was.

[ Which probably wasn't terribly hard, in a lot of ways, but it does make her interested. ]

You've got time, right? You don't look all that old. Maybe when you're older you'll want to go out and see what else is out there. That's what people tend to say, isn't it?

[ She shrugs, and smiles. ]

If you're happy where you're at, then good for you, that's what I say.

I'll bet. [Grins]

Yeah. I'm only eleven. I'll finish school at eighteen and then I'll see the world.
