Indeed. And my mundane hasn't really settled on which canon I'm from. If they want a redhead, I can be that for them; if they prefer brunettes, I can be that as well. If they've a thing for chimeras...well, I suppose the point has been made.

It's more than a title, Edward. We State Alchemists are given access to the most classified alchemical documents that have ever been recorded. For progress in the name of science, some sacrifice must be made. It's an equivalent exchange: life for knowledge. The knowledge to create and sustain life.

Rather foolish, don't you think? An alchemist's job is to make discoveries. How can he do this if he must not push the limits of known theory?

She was my daughter. And Alexander was a cherished family member as well. And if you think losing them was not a sacrifice for me, you have me greatly misjudged.

To truly push the boundaries of science, an alchemist must be willing to do what most would consider unthinkable. We can accomplish anything, so long as we have the knowledge and tools to make it possible. Your attempt to challenge death failed because you lacked these resources. Are you saying that to gain them, and benefit the whole of mankind in the process, no human loss is an acceptable trade?

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. A human life can never be returned, not matter how far we advance in alchemy. If we ignore Equivalent Exchange, we become nothing but parasites, just taking.

And? What's the tools you need to do that work?

Chalk, and plenty of it, for drawing transmutation circles. Any alchemical tomes we can get our hands on. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to procuring them from the State Library at this point, though it's not something I'm willing to ask your people to do as it would entail a fair amount of risk. Then some living specimens on which to experiment.

I don't expect I would, except that in our world, with popularity comes prestige, power. And I need that if I'm to leave a lasting legacy behind.

Is claiming a title all that important to you? From what I hear you're far too talented to let yourself be tied down to a rather pathetic little title.

Please don't misunderstand. It is not the title itself that is important to me, but the privileges that are derived from it. State Alchemists have restricted access to records of value to researchers such as myself. Regardless of talent, those who are humble enough to rest on the shoulders of past geniuses are the ones who invariably achieve the greatest success.
