I am seventeen, sir. I might be the youngest Ensign in the fleet but I am more than capable.

Aye, sir. I have been stationed on the Enterprise for around six months now. She is a beautiful ship.

No, I don't think so. Nothing out of the ordinary anyway.

I don't know how you managed to get off the ship, but...

[Jim pauses. Splits into a wide smile]

I'm really glad to see someone as reliable as you around. Here I thought I was the only one.

[in the most dire voice]

So he has mentioned, Doctor. He has also said he is more than capable, is this true?

[The Doctor of the ship would know, might as well ask.]

That she is. [Slightly wistful tone there.]

[A long suffering sigh, not at you, just at the things that he has to endure.]

He is. But emotionally, sir...

[Emotionally, to be honest, Chekov's far ahead of many of the crewmembers of the Enterprise. But McCoy likes to keep an extra eye on him just in case. Adolescence is hard enough without facing life or death situations every day.]

Ah...for that we all might be guilty.

[Pike has seen enough fighting and death to last him a lifetime.]

[At the note in Pike's voice, McCoy's eyes narrow, and he drops a little of the grumpiness. Only a little. He's still himself, after all.]

Being out in the dark of space for too long can make any man tense, especially with the things you starship captains tend to take on yourselves.
