[Caesar, of course, does not wave back. Neither does he approach. Instead, he eyes the young human warily, though he does not yet sense any danger.]

[that wariness is like a glaring red STOP sign, so Hiro will just not get any closer and not move too suddenly. he'll even try to keep his hands out of his hoodie pockets, though he makes a lotta gestures]

Ah, yeah. Humans do that sometimes. And once ya got a bad experience, it's hard to trust again . . . So you might not believe me, but we're not all bad. Some make a lotta bad mistakes. [he bites his lip, then continues more determinedly] But there are some really good people out there! They just . . . aren't always on the front lines.

And since there's no war here, it should be fine! Right? [hopeful smile?? :D]

[If this had been Koba, then the boy definitely would have been in danger. Caesar is not confrontational, nor is he dangerous to a boy as harmless as Hiro. Not that the boy genius is harmless, of course, but it's clear he means no harm to this ape. Caesar listens to him, before speaking again.]

[He moved a little closer, but not in a way that seemed he was going to hurt Hiro. Just... curious. Caesar did not have his family to protect here, anyway.]

It doesn't have to be that way. At least not forever. You've shown intelligence and now you're showing you can't be pushed around by your older cousins.

It's not going to be easy, but perhaps man and intelligent ape could co-exist. Apes being treated like any other foreign power.

[Hiro's definitely lucky Caesar isn't Koba. otherwise, he'd have another comical Desperately Running Away scene that might involve a mop. except it probably wouldn't end with a cushy landing]

Oh good. So ya didn't need my super heroic speech at all. [he shrugs and chuckles a little self-deprecatingly. what was a hopeful smile becomes more genuine.

at the mention of war, though, his face falls]

Figures. [he sighs. all it takes is one person making a big mistake] How bad is it? Can you at least fend them off?

[Caesar huffs something that is a laugh of his own. He's become more comfortable around this young human, as is probably evident by the way he moves closer, and doesn't seem so tense. Then again, he always was a little too trusting of humans, because of Will, then Malcolm.]

Some humans good. Raise Caesar. [Though his speech is halted, he's becoming better at it.]

War not bad yet. War coming. Humans will not forgive ape.

[And maybe this is just the way it will have to be now.]

[under the surface, Hiro is a little nervous because the only animal experience he has is his aunt's cat, Mochi. but he's not worried for his safety. he trusts animals perhaps more than he should. he is a city boy]

So you can stop it! If it's not bad yet, there's something you can do. There's always something, if you think hard enough.

[he tones down the burst of excitement and cups his chin with a hand] What supplies do ya got?

[Hiro doesn't understand, but he has no reason to. He comes from a different time and place than Caesar. And Caesar... he's just tired of it all.]

[Because Caesar didn't want war. He didn't want to lose more apes than he already had.]

[Hiro frowns. not trying to make peace feels like giving up, and that's just not in his nature. even when it seems hopeless, he bounces back eventually. he opens his mouth to say as much]

But . . . [wait, no. he catches Caesar's tired tone, and so he bites it back. he doesn't know the details, and ranting won't help. not when he doesn't know how to get to Caesar's home so he can pitch in.

at least Caesar has the right priorities]
