[Well Jack is surprised.]

Kyle? I wasn't... expecting to see you here.

[Give him a moment...

And here's a grin for your patience.]

Hey there, Jack. I wasn't expecting to see you here either. But I'm glad to. [He considers taking off his mask out of courtesy, but... he'd rather Jack didn't see the mutations on his face right at the moment.]

[He's not really sure what to make of the mask, to be honest.

He's not really sure what to make of any of this encounter.]

I... I'm glad to see you too.

Is the mask new?

[This is awkward.]

Yes, sort of. New projects, new faces, that sort of thing. [Casually dancing around that subject like a goddamn ballerina.]

So what happened to you? I thought you were headed off to greener pastures up on the topside. Seemed pretty rushed about it too. [He's very laid back about it, like they're discussing weather. At least it's not-awkward for one of them?]

[Jack looks surprised. He's not from as far along as Kyle is, he has no idea what he's talking about.]

Topside? I wasn't... what are you talking about?

[Kyle narrows his eyes, although he supposes Jack can't see that. Now that he thinks about it, Jack seems... a lot more together than he was last time they met. Much more like their first few encounters. He doesn't quite understand, but... there are a lot of things he could question that he doesn't.]

...I guess not, huh? [He chuckles, rocks his head back and forth to the tune of something akin to unexpected contentedness.] Nevermind, then. It's nothing. You'll learn soon enough. Just like everyone else. [For all the foreboding words, his tone is still pleasant and calm as ever.]

[He stares at Kyle, confused and starting to get a little angry. He's had an awful lot of people knowing more than him and not telling him anything, and he's getting tired of it.]

What are you talking about, Kyle?

Oh, Rapture going to shit, mostly. [Ever so casual still.] I don't know how much you know, but it hasn't been pretty the last few days. We've got a civil war on our hands, and... I guess I'm pretty lucky getting holed up in Cohen's fruity rumpus asshole factory, everyone sort of steered clear of there. Mm... Didn't steer clear of all the chaos myself though. Gotta say I did go a little crazy... so did everyone. So did you.

[...well, the going to shit part isn't really that much of a surprise. It was pretty definitely heading that way, but... civil war? Is that what Atlas was after?]

What kind of crazy are we talking about?

Mm... the new ADAM is different. Atlas did something to it - that's my guess. Few shots of it and he had every splicer in the joint in his back pocket. There's still voices in my head from it, you know... Voices that want you dead. Just like Atlas does. [Or that's the sense he got from the PA announcements and splicer movements.

And as he speaks he advances, probably unnervingly close for the sort of things coming out of his mouth.] And me... I didn't go half as crazy as everyone else. You're pretty lucky, Jack, you haven't seen all the fun left over from it. But it's all calmed down now... There's not enough people left alive to keep fighting. Just a lot of lonely splicers, and a few Little Sisters with way too much work on their hands. Hopefully your father too, but honestly? I wouldn't count on it.

[There's an instinct in him that tells him to back away or to lash out, protect himself, but he doesn't. Jack stands his ground and keeps his eyes trained on the mask, on where Kyle's eyes are though he can only just barely see them.

Atlas... wants him dead? And... so many people are already dead... according to Kyle.

Jack doesn't know what to do with all of this information. It barely makes any sense. He doesn't want to believe it.

And here's Kyle, wearing a mask and talking like... Jack doesn't even know. He reaches out a hand toward the mask, not sure if he just wants to touch it or if he wants to take it off entirely.]

[Once upon a time he would have worried at seeing Jack so clearly uncomfortable, but it's been a long road of EVE hypos and Cohen's physical and oral lashings, and instead he finds it interesting and endearing. The calm smirk on his face grows into a full mischievous grin, and a hand reaches up to firmly place Jack's on his mask. A hand that is warmer than a human's necessarily should be, the skin dry and taut from exposure to the heat from an Incinerate! plasmid.] You can take it off if you like. It's your choice. You might not like what you see under it... might as well give you the fair warning now, huh?

[Jack stands still, very still, his hand resting on Kyle's mask.

He's not sure he wants to see this, but Kyle's changed and he wants to see just how changed he is. His hand is hot on his, almost uncomfortably so.

He hesitates for a moment, then Jack's fingers close around the edge of Kyle's mask and he pulls it off.]

[Well the mask is off, and under it are the starting signs of ADAM mutilation. Lumps grow on the edge of his forehead and one shows signs it plans to grow past that, his eyes are sunken in and pulse with a dim blue glow. It's not just that; his attitude has changed. Something about him, about the nature of the light in his eyes, just isn't as friendly anymore.

He guilds Jack's hand to toss the mask aside; it's pretty pointless now. But his hand stays holding Jack's, lacing their fingers idly if he'll allow it.] Now you know. Too bad, huh? If I wasn't half-sure Steinman's dead I'd have fixed myself up better.

[Jack allows it, holding Kyle's hand gently, twining his fingers with Kyle's long slender ones.

He stares at Kyle's face, at everything that screams Splicer. And though Jack knows he should probably run, he can't. He won't.

Jack swallows past a lump in his throat.]

Rapture's falling apart, isn't it.

[It's not really a question. It's more Jack telling himself what he's already known, thoughts made truth by the act of speaking them.]

Honestly? It was doomed from the get-go. [Kyle sighs, idly examining their hands, how his own has gotten all cracked and weathered while Jack's is cool, soft and... normal. Jack's still human.] The moment your old man said there wouldn't be any rules, that's when he doomed us. Atlas didn't have to do much of anything to fuck it all up. And you.. I guess you couldn't do jack to stop it. [...He snickers.] Get it? Jack?

Yeah. I get it.

[He follows Kyle's gaze down to their hands. Suddenly, he starts to feel angry, at his father, at Atlas, everyone who destroyed Rapture. Are destroying. Whatever.]

Guess you're free now. Or will be. Unless you die on the way to the surface. [He shrugs, because it doesn't really matter either way. Not for him.] But hey, fresh start as long as you're not there. Lucky you.

[Considering how much attention he paid to his fort frolic mission (the minimum it took to get out of there) it's a wonder he recognizes this guy.]

... You have a personality beyond screaming?

[... Then again, he might not, considering how his meetings with the other disciples went.]

Not yet.

[His hand tightens around Kyle's, just a little.]

I haven't gotten there yet.

I like to think so, but maybe you prefer me screaming. [Shrug?

And then a confused head tilt because.... because WTF, this is not the Jack he knows. He looks so much worse than Kyle's Jack ever got.]

...Did you not make it to the surface, then? [He doesn't really get this whole 'that's not your Jack' thing yet.]

Hmm... well, no pain no gain. [He notes the tightening of Jack's hand and moves a bit closer, his free hand moving to trace soothing patterns on Jack's chest.] Fair's fair, you'll have to suffer like everyone else. Or maybe a little more. Mun says your girlfriend died. I don't know her, so it doesn't mean much to me. [He says it all as an offhand comment. Oh, the sky is blue, water is wet, Diane got run over by a tin Daddy.]

[Jack raises his eyebrow a little.]

Uh. Yes and no. Long story. Uh...

Fitzpatrick, right?

[He asks, because it's the only name from the four he remembered, and he wasn't about to call someone 'angry', 'frosty', or 'drunky' to their splicer mask.

[Have a long pause.

A really long one.

He frowns.]

I'm hurt, Jack. [Although his tone is still light.] You'd think a few drinks and a dance would get a guy farther with you. Not mention everything else we've gotten up to. [He looks Jack over and shifts his weight.] Or did you forget all that? I mean... you clearly forgot your high standing, Mr. Ryan.

[Surely, Kyle will enjoy watching Jack raise his eyebrows and generally look like someone just said a bunch of crazy made up shit to him.

Because uh, from his perspective yes, that's exactly what's going on. This Jack's relationship with Fitzpatrick was a little short-lived. Kind of a flash-in-the-pan.]

I think - I think one of us is missing something, here.

[That's about as close to tact and diplomacy as this Jack can get.]

I never-- I mean - you're one of Cohen's... ['Disciple' feels really weird to say, but Jack can't really settle on a better word. See what I mean? So he just kind of winces at himself and shrugs, and then thankfully shifts his focus:]

I mean. Not 'Mr. Ryan', first of all.
