Mun, just because the game you play canon me in is doing a musical effect doesn't mean you need to give me an image song. I'm not going to sing it, and she doesn't even know about me and couldn't become me. Besides, I don't kill. I just don't save everyone, and there's always a consequence.

Not everyone deserves to be saved.

No, but I prefer it when they're the ones to make the choice not to be saved.

Perhaps. But it's fair enough. I'm not even removing myself from the equation, just not getting into it in the first place.

I remember. [All too well.] But when the only person in danger is the dreg who caused all the trouble, I have a hard time motivating myself to risk my life just so they have another chance at endangering the city.

Hey, I'm not gonna argue. Just own it. "Killing" and "letting someone die" isn't exactly a big difference.

I don't think he'd see a difference at all.

He's changed since he hung up the cowl, and even more after his successor's death.

[and she just about goes bug-eyed behind the mask] Hung up - seriously? I thought he'd die first. And he let someone else be Batman?

They must've been pretty damn impressive.

[Shrug] He got old.

He didn't exactly let anyone be Batman at first; Terry stole the Batsuit before getting the old man's approval. I did the same, after Terry was murdered. Guess he was impressed enough to give approval after the fact.

[the wry humour is gone from her voice] You know, I think that's the one thing he didn't prepare for.

[she grins at first, clearly impressed, but the smile fades quickly] You two were close, huh? [she figures that has to be the motive, there, at least part of it]

You just kinda hate all fun, don't you? C'mon, it's just a song.

And not saving someone might not be killing them. But if you have the chance and can't, you're responsible.

I don't like fun when the joke's on me.

I can live with being responsible for that. If a villain's life is in danger because of their own actions, why should I bail them out, just so they can endanger the city again?

You have a real broad definition of joke if that's what you think a joke is.

You do it because it's what separates you from them. It's what keeps you from becoming a killer, from ever picking up a gun and trying to take a life on purpose. The only reason that I didn't go further down that road after Fixx and the Trio was because I had the old man to hold me back... and even he's had trouble stopping himself from killing.

Sorry, I think my sense of humor got skewed when my whole life crashed down around me. I'll work on fixing that once Gotham is crime-free.

He's... not holding me back as much as he did for you. I think losing Terry hit him really hard. He keeps me from outright killing anyone, and he never actually approves of letting the dregs die, but he doesn't rake me over the coals for it, either.

You sound like the old man. Trust me, that's not a good thing. Gotham will never be crime-free, not unless you wipe the place off the map. If you don't let yourself have some kind of life, you'll just wind up like Wayne.

And he's loosing his touch.

It's called sarcasm. Besides, I let Max handle the humor and fun. I can afford to sound like the old man as long as she has my back.

If you're letting someone else handle all the fun of your life, sorry, you're not living. Trust me. I've tried. And if your boy really is the same person as me, I'm sure he tried too, and his social life was just as terrible.

[snort] No way, we should totally go out of our way to save the axe murderers.

And hey, theme songs are fun. Even creatures of the night need some of that once in a while.

Especially when they're getting cut with their own axes.

I don't have time for fun like that. It's just a distraction.

Maybe we could shine them while we're at it?

See, that's where people with the ears [and she does in fact make bat ears with her fingers] get tripped up. You can't be in vigilante mode all the time. It'll just burn you up.

That might be going too far. If the old man shuts me down, Gotham won't have a full-time protector.

Four years and I haven't burned out yet.

We'll stick to Operation: Replace Axes With Toys, then.
