(((It occurs to me the way I wrote that suggested she doesn't know who Veronica is. I meant she just had trouble believing that the "Veronica" the Courier mentions out of the blue could be the Veronica from her past--not without further explanation. Ah well.)))

[just a hint of a smirk; dryly] And by your username, I guess you've held on to your strengths.

Yeeeah, though I don't know if it was the same me. [Man, that sounds weird to bring up.] I knew a different Courier - seems there's a lot of them running around. _{Even saw another me once, that was trippy...}

[She grins slightly.] Yeah, got no plans on dying anytime soon.

[That grin widens a bit.] Oh yeah - much to the chagrin of...pretty much everyone in the chapter. [Eheh.]

I knew a couple couriers... but that's not what you mean. I'd think it was trippy too, but that other you're talking about's in the mun's headspace.

I think even bigger than that - a lot of worlds at stake, if you can imagine it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, to tell the truth.

[There's a slightly sheepish grin.] I suppose it's possible.

Worlds? [that is hard to wrap one's head around] So a lot of major tech, probably. I hope... [straightening] ...you keep it out of the wrong hands.

[pause. She hates talking in this voice, especially to Veronica, but she wants to say something] You were just like him, back then, you know; could see the potential in what a piece of tech could do. He decided to find the most destructive tech possible, enhance it, make it worse.

I want to believe you stayed to make things better. Find ways to rebuild, not end things.

The tech... I'm going to try and not worry about it. With just three of us around up against a whole crew of people who have already been using it for who knows how long? It makes the odds of survival we had in the Mojave look good.

[There's a familiar knot in Veronica's stomach that comes up at the mentioning of Elijah.] I... He had some good ideas back then - those are what I kept from him. Not the obsessions, not the extremism...

[She pauses.]

Not the driving people apart.

If one of the three of you's the Courier, that raises your chances, I figure.

[relaxes a bit]... I'm glad to hear that.

No - me, you, and...well, if you can believe it, Maxson. Not just a Maxson, but the Maxson.

[There's a wry, if sad smile.] I thought highly of the man, but I could still see his flaws as they came about. Most of them, anyway.

Well, he's a product of the Old World. His perspective's probably pretty different.
