Let me put this into perspective. Imagine you're drunk and you've got a blindfold on, a red marker in your hand and the viewscreen in front of you. Wherever you decide to circle is where the ship explores next.
That's basically what I'm dealing with here. Why, got any suggestions?
I hope that's not how you plan to captain the Enterprise. [j/k j/k j/k.........mostly.
But. More seriously.]
Pavel -- Ensign Chekov [it's sometimes hard to remember the formalities, she's lived with the young Russian for so long] and I are at poly_chromatic. It'd be nice to have a familiar face.
If it was, I'm sure you'd follow orders immaculately.
[ Do you want him to give you nothing but a PADD to work with, Nyota? Because he will just to prove that he can win this sassfest. He raises his brows, pleasantly surprised to hear two competent members of his bridge crew are alongside one another. ]
I'll look into it. Do you have a report for me? Nothing fancy, gimme a heads up on what to expect if I get blasted in your direction.
[bitch plz She doesn't need technology to be a badass at sass her job. But time and place.]
It's an interdimensional city known only as "the City." It appears to be run by beings who are commonly referred to as "the deities," but there are some indications that they are not the highest power. A random selection of people are struck with curses every few days. These curses can range from the absurd, such as being turned into a teacup poodle [slight twitch of her lips -- Pavel had been an adorable poodle] to the deadly serious. [She doesn't give an example of this, because she doesn't like to remember the ghoul...curse? Event? Whatever it was, where she was hunted by a monster who wore Spock's face. She doesn't like to remember killing him.]
The deities. [ Great, godly wannabes. That sounds like fun, maybe he can escort his phaser over to introduce them to the Stun setting. He really is taking this very seriously until he hears the words teacup poodle and smirks, unable to stop himself waving a hand. ] Wait, wait — that's a pretty specific breed, who got turned into a dog?
[ The Deadly Serious can wait ten seconds, this is going to be really goddamned good important. ]
[no please let's get back to the light hearted "captain i'm sorry but there is no way in hell you are a german shepherd you hyperactive easily bored well-meaning but destructive brat" discussion. ]
They do sometimes. [He's going to ask her to elaborate and she'll have to because he's her captain and besides which, she owes him a warning. But. She still can't bring herself to volunteer the information, vainly hoping that he'll just take her at her word.]
[ He'd love to debate how she's obviously a greyhound after little bunny Spock, but the reserve that rises when he presses for information has blue eyes narrowing a fraction, reading the body-language for what it's worth. ]
Are you okay?
[ Besides desperately wanting to understand, he needs to know that first. Always will. ]
[That? Right there? Is why she can't hate him, even though he's frequently an entitled asshole.]
I'm fine, sir. [It's a lie, but she's forcing herself to make it true.] One of the curses involved zombies that looked like loved ones from home. Only the person who loved them could kill them.
I think I prefer the puppies. [ Hand on a hip, he can't stop raking her with a scrutinizing look; she seems to be holding together well enough, zombie boyfriends aside. His dry tone shifts a notch into something more serious. ] How long have you been stranded there?
A year? [ If he had any power in the situation, he'd have already flown the Enterprise over, rescued his crewmen and left the damn City to rot. A year. Jim can't imagine abandoning anyone in his new family for a day. ] I'm sorry.
[ Because no matter what anyone says it is his responsibility to look after those in his charge. Reasons why he can't in this case side too close to excuses for comfort. ]
It's not your fault. Time doesn't pass in our home worlds while we're there. When we return, it's as though we never left. There's no way you could have known we're here.
Yeah, but still. [ His palms spread as he talks, clasping as he reviews his options and shakes his head. ] I'm not gonna leave you in some backwards pocket of space. Not for another year, Nyota.
[ He makes a good case for her, and nods to that reserve page. Ahrrm. ]
We'll figure it out together, then we'll get off that planet somehow, some way, and back to the Enterprise.
[Her lips twitch. She's been here long enough that she seriously doubts what he's proposing is possible, but if anybody can break the rules of time and space, it's James Kirk.]
I don't recall giving you [permission to use] my first name, James. [mingled annoyance and affection]
This is a touching reunion, get on board with it already. [ HUFFS. RUDE, HE'S COMING TO SAVE YOUR ASSES. ] And if you've absolutely got to, just use Jim.
