I think the story seems believable. Deserters don't seem to be common to your order, but statistics say there had to be at least one.

Not to mention you are working on limited information for the moment. For all you know the assassins of his region were a corrupt sect making it far easier for the Templars to convince him they were right.

The Templars might of outright lied to him about their final goals.
