It's apparently something they enjoy doing, for the sake of tormenting us. Your best bet is to simply let them have their way. The more you fight, the more...terrible the things will become.

Mundanes don't usually put much stock in 'who's in charge'... they tend to follow their whims, it seems, though the rate at which they actually go through with their ideas when they 'wake us up' is... well. Variant at best.
